Las Vegas is one of my favorite cities on earth because it’s only half an hour drive from the desert. Right after I am done with the formalities of renting a car, I get out of the airport and hit the road either in the direction of Mojave, or to Utah. On this trip, I was actually trapped in Vegas for a conference. When the whole affair turned rather mediocre from a professional viewpoint, I decided to take the 90-km drive to the Valley of Fire. It was a brilliant day following an early morning rainstorm. After hiking at various spots, I started to take a walk around Atlatl Rock, a landmark that has some fine examples of petroglyphs on it. Nearby, I found this little arch. The whole formation is known as Arch Rock.

Here is some info from Wikipedia: Being a part of the Mojave Desert, the Valley of Fire derives its name from red sandstone formations caused by the shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs, 150 million years ago. Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. Prehistoric users of the Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker people and later the Anasazi farmers from the nearby fertile Moapa Valley. The span of approximate occupation has been dated from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D. Their visits probably involved hunting, food gathering, and religious ceremonies, although scarcity of water would have limited the length of their stay. In the workshop, I am posting an example of the rock art that can be found in Petroglyph Canyon, located in the Valley.

Trivia: Star Trek Generations was filmed in the Valley of Fire, and it was here that Captain Kirk fell to his death!

Gunaydin Hakan,
It's a very beautiful sandstone formation. Colors, light and the contrast is great. Very good POV and composition.

Your photo reminded me of the rock formations and the prehistoric rock paintings of Latmos mountains in Bafa Lake.

wonderful shot

Hi Hakan

Just got up and turned PC on - and this was the first shot I saw. Great way to start my day. You have handled this shot well - these pale sandstones (forget their name - entenada?) have a tendency to burn out in photographs, but here you have caught their creamy-yellow quality, set against the wonderful blue of the high desert sky.

James

Hi Hakan,

Beautiful shot. You capture these landscape photos very well. Nice composition, colour and textures. Exposure is just right. TFS.

Carl

Fantásticos contrastes entre el cielo azul y el color de esta formación rocosa.
Buen POV. Nitidez excelente.
Una nota muy instructiva.
Saludos, JL.

Merhaba Hakan,
What is not to like in a shot like this eh!
Amazing swirls in the rocks, it looks like cookie dough when the beaters have been pulled out!
The contrast of the warm rock colours against the blue sky is of course without parallel! Very nice detail in the rock.

Tfs, Jay

I'm sure it appears in tourist brochuresof the area, but I really like the simplisity of the shot.
Great POV and excellent contrasting colours.
Beautiful textures in the formation.
Well done
Chris

Merhaba Hakan I really like colours a lot and saturation retaining good detail and contrast is amazing another succesfull shot with this superb film you use. Nicely composed and a viewpoint. tebrikler selamlar Necip.

Hi Hakan.
You are Great Master of colour, light and shapes. Your POV is brilliant. Richness and beautifulness of colours impress the imagination. The small clouds into the arch is nice godsend of creative photographer. BRAVO. Great artistic picture. My congratulations and TFS.

Hello Hakan,
This is very stunning. This desert is so rich in history and legends that it might be very impressive to be there. I like this picture a lot with this super texture, details, color's saturation, POV and composition. Contrast and lightning are amazing too. The picture in WS is so interesting, that must be something to see; it is like a time travel, wow! Well done with interesting notes. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Hakan,
Stunning quality image!
I like so much the incidence of sun rays, and the magnificent colors it gets from the stones and desert.
They're so rich in textures! Just look at it!
How much early in the morning it was taken?
It's really good the color saturation -just the way I like it- and the high contrast between deep blue of sky and intense yellow of rocks.
I think the composition made here is barely impossible to be better.
Congratulations and many thanks for share it.
Warm regards,
JM

Hello Hakan,
A fantastic picture. Great pov, sharpness, and exposure. The sunlight helps show off beautiful formation of red sandstone. Wonderful deep blue sky in the background. TFS this masterpiece.

Fabulous and purely amazing!! If I had known that I might find such wonders in the desert outside of Las Vegas, I'd have stayed there a few days instead of using it only as a pit stop between air planes!
You've captured this brilliantly too: in a composition that is artful and artistic

Hi Hakan

This is a very beautiful and interesting rock formation. You ddi great to escape that conference and take a walk through such a magnificent place.
I also visited a small part of the Mohave 2 years ago and i remember some interesting sights ;)
Anyway, the erotion on this rock is really so well visible and the rather low-light raelly enhances all the shadows nicely.
The colors are brilliant and superbly saturated and the contrast between the rock and that perfect blue sky is most impressive.
Interesting shot in the WS, too ;)

Bravo and TFS

What special place! with an appropiate name "Arch Rock"... but also it makes me think of the sea, under the sea. And your image is like an invitation to visit it.
Wonderful colours and form in a wonderful word.

Hi Hakan,
You are doing the TN community a great service by taking out these priceless gems from your rich collection of slides and photographs from the pre-digital era, my friend.
This fantastic creation of nature in the Mojave Desert may be a often-frequented destination of tourists as of today, but your capture of it (on slide, I presume)almost a decade ago is a real work of art in addition to its documentary value.
The power of polarizer becomes manifest in pictures of this standard only where the synergy between the orangish-brown of the sandstone and the blue of the sky turns into sheer poetry.
Thanks a lot for showing us this amazing picture.
Ram

Hi Hakan,

A very beautiful photo with such rich colors and wonderful details. The blue sky contrasts great with the yellow colored rock. The composition is really good, eventhough I might have croped a little from the right. I really do like the layers of the rock running diagonal. I also like the note, especially the trivia part.
