At the base of the falls, (Middle North Falls on Silver Creek) were these large balls of ice. This freeze being an unusual occurance, and I having had little experience with freezing temperatures made this a fascinating event to me. I guess I am easily entertained!! : )

These large 4 foot balls of ice (one and a half meters) spun and bobbed continuously in the churning water. As about a third of the ball was above water at any one time they continually grew in size as the new wet surface contacted the freezing air. It was really interesting, also very noisy, to stand and watch this waterfall.

Hello Evelynn!
Very nice shots and presentation.I liked details,POV,framing
and composition a lot.TFS...:-)

Hi Evelyn,
Another stunning photo of your frozen falls collection. I really like the note, and I've never seen these kind of balls before. I can imagine how they develop.
TFS,
Niek

Amazing, Evelynn! I have never heard of this happening! But of course, freezing is rare where I live as well. I am glad you included a shot of the falls too, since this otherwise would just look like a collection of snowballs in the water, not the massive ice balls they are.

Hi Evelyn,
that's a strange phenomenon I've never seen before, living in a country with a lot of icy waterfalls in the mountains in winter. Thank you for showing these interesting pictures. Each one of them deserves to be presented in full size. Best regards,
Peter

This is really fascinating, Evelynn. I have been totally mesmerized by the scientific and aesthetic aspects of your ice freeze series. Who would have thought? Nature is a miracle... in its mysterious ways. : )
TFS this very informative and interesting notes and pictures. : )

Hi Evelynn, Well spotted and I must say it is a fascinating capture. I have never seen this before and they are so huge 4Ft. Good idea to post two images to give us an understanding of the surroundings. Good work.

Maybe there is a kind of Yeti living around and making those big iceballs!

It is the first time I see such phenomenon.

Very well seen and well done. Thanks for posting, Evelynn.

Frankly, I would be entertained by it also. Nice capture of an interesting phenomena.
Cheers
Otto
