[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This image was taken only a few feet from the image I posted as a workshop today. The ice formations in both were built up from the mist of very nearby South Falls. The ice that formed on these sticks looks frosty and cloudy. The ice that formed on the sticks in the workshop photo are crystal clear. Why? I know it has to do with air in the ice. Maybe the force of the falling water made more wind around this one. I find ice fascinating.

Hi Evelyn

Another great shot. The cloudy ice contains a lot of air whilst the clear ice doesn't. So ice forming from a spay situation will be cloudy, whilst ice forming from condensation will be clear. Cloudy ice will gradually turn clear if compressed - as in a glacier (blue ice contains less air and is generally older and purer). It is a bit more complicated than that, but those are the basics - if you want more let me know (OK, so I have 2 degrees in Geography, used to teach it, and really should get a life for knowing this)! James Afterthought - if the spray freezes quicly the air is trapped - if it frezez more slowly some escapes.

Hello Evelynn
Both your pictures (i.e this one and those from the workshop) are wonderful. I like the composition of this picture - these ice sticks look like the leaves of the palm.
Sharpness is also great.
Thanks for sharing

I get that same phenomenon here too Evelynn. I believe I posted something like that awhile back, where I had both cloudy and clear ice in the same photo. Nice detail here and the bit of green makes a nice splash of colour.

Hi Evelynn,
Well I see that James has already gave you the explanation as to the difference so I will just comment on this beautiful capture. Nicely composed, with great details and that little splash of color, thanks Evelynn. Lucy my wife loves these ice formations you have captured.

Fascinating indeed, Evelynn. I really like the composition with a hint of green at the bottom for contrast. Perfect technical execution, too.
Best wishes,
Hakan

Hello Evelynn

Nice ice.The spray from the falls creates beautiful ice sculptures.I agree with the others the hint of green makes a nice contrast.I see in the foreground little clear ice beads too.Very good DOF and POV.TFS

Another fascinating and beautiful "ice sculpture" by nature.
What a great explanation from James. : )
You have always had a good eye for composition.
You captured these ice formations with sharp details and perfect exposure.
