My bet would be on something else..but what I do not know..It certainly shall be identified quickly..one way or the other as it is a super ID image Tom. I finally had some luck on identifying one of mine today...boy....is this a learning environment or what?

Beautiful image Tom,
I tried Google Image and it sure resembles the Redwing Blackbird female, especially the white band on the head.
The workshop image is the stumper though, because it clearly shows a red pattern on the upper wing. I'm guessing that you are probably right in assuming that this is a young male.

Hi Tom, I don't know this bird any better than you do, and I probably have the same book, but it looks like a juvenile Red-winged Blackbird to me. The difference between the juvenile and the female is the juvenile has an "orangish shoulder pad". Judging from your workshop I think you have a juvenile. I don't know if I've ever seen one of these, if I have then I didn't recognize it. This one is seen in good colour with great detail. The pose is good, but I would crop about 2 inches off the top of the frame to give the bird equal distance between the top and bottom.
Thanks, John

Hi Tom
I would say this is a female Red-Winged Blackbird. The females have a very pointed sharp beak....go figure... LOL. This is a really nice portrait of your Blackbird. The green background is a nice contrast to the colour of the feathers. Well done.

hello Tom
maybe i am wrong, but in my National Geographic Society
« Field Guide to the Birds of North America » book
this photo is like the illustration of the female Red-Winged Blackbird,
and the one on the Workshop it looks like the illustration
of one years old male or in your photo even less tha a years old,
but i can be in error
2 excellent pics with fine POVs, DOFs and framings,
wonderful luminosity of the image with excellent sharpness and details,
TFS
