This was the news I posted yesterday afternoon. The picture was taken early this AM at sunrise from 75 miles away. What you see on th horizon is Mica Peak in Idaho as seen from Cheney. I am on the Palouse road, alone. Jane is home with her two way radio on. I drove up a steep incline of dirt and gravel just outside of our town to get a look at Mica Peak across a part of the Palouse which is being farmed. You can see the smoke lying close to the ground as it does during early mornings. This fire has destroyed 1200 acres of woods and grass with winds in excess of 50 mph. It was named the Dishman Mica Fire of 2008. Started on Thursday afternoon pacific US time. I decided to stay away from the area and cover it from a distance and this is the skyscape I came up with before my eyes were fully clear. Taken with my Nikon D50 and Nikon 28-70mm lens and a polarizer.

From bobshannon.org news website yesterday: "Strong winds have been whipping across the Inland Northwest today and a rather power packed low pressure system has been passing north of the Canadian Border. Sustained winds have been over 30 miles per hour in some of the open spaces, with occasional gusts in excess of 40 miles per hour. All of this has kicked up a little bit of dust, but the main concern has been the fire danger, with Red Flag Warnings up for most of the region. The winds will back off tonight, and much less of a breeze will blow on Friday. It will also be cooler tonight, with temperatures dipping into the 40s by daybreak, and that will bring the relative humidity up as well. "

These forest fires are a bane in parts of your country, Bob. I read a novel on this theme a few years ago and it re-creates the horror of these conflagrations with graphic details and also highlights the heroism of your fire-fighters.
The smoke creates a layer in this early morning landscape and adds beauty to the composition even though we would have been better off without it!
Thanks and take care.
Ram
PS: I added a fresh chapter to my blog today.

Hi Bob

This is a gorgeous posting - a real tonal 'essay'. I really love the light catching the meadow - really beautiful work.

Interesting how residual smoke can soften the land contours while the sky looks clear in the early morning light. A beautiful shot, Bob!
The view of Mica Peak looks pretty clear too. 1200 acres is a large fire, presumably started by a cigarette end, like many forest fires in Sweden.
Well worth driving in the dark to get such a shot. Have a good weekend,
Ivan

Hello Bob,
This is a lovely morning capture across the fields to the mountain far away. Beautiful light and shadows on the fields, lovely silhouettes of the line of pine trees and I can almost smell the strip of smoke! I hope there won't be any more forest fires, it must be very frightening!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Gorgeous lighting, nicely composed, tranquil scene. Beautifully captured and presented.

Bob,

This is a startling view, isn't it? I also wanted photos, but my Asthma kept acting up and I was forced inside.

What is so frightening is that this photo is beautiful, but nature, in all her fury can indeed be stunning.

I can't help but think of the wildlife that is caught in the midst of the smoke, flames, and other debris, or the homes, pets, and people that will (and are) affected by this fire.

This is beauty at it's finest despite the cause. Thank you for posting.

Hi Bob,

Our news is so full of talk about the terrible California fires that this one has not been mentioned. A wonderful early morning landscape with the light and shadows on the field, the very visible line of smoke and the mountains above. We have our fingers crossed that Tucson will be spared of fires this summer but with all the lightening strikes who knows.

Jane

Hey Bob!
The colours, soft light and smoke are so atmospheric.
I love how you've composed this.
Excellent exposure too.

Very well done!

Joe

hello Bob

i wish this forest fire will be put out, you did an excellent shot
with the shadowed foreground and lightened mountain lines,
that create a fine DOF to the image, and with the pine tree
silhouettes on the middle of that, TFS

More fires, in the US, earlier in Europe, Australia...it goes on!Stone age, Ice age, Fire Age?I ce is melting, stone is anyways smelting, the earthis warming as it is burning!
A wonderful shot, Bob!And a perfect note!

Hello Bob,

If I hadn't read your notes, I would just have perceived this as a beautiful morning shot with the sun beginning to show over the distant mountains!

These fires must be terrifying, as well as devastating huge tracts of land for man and beast!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Oh, how sad, and dangerous too, this is Bob. Hope fully the fire has all been contained and stopped by now.
Those hills look closer than 75 miles away! Must be a good camera and lens!
Very interesting
Janice

Namastay Bob,
A nice capture of this beautiful landscape at dawn. Very well composed and lovely colors. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
HP

Hi Bob, amazing image, the smoke looks like morning fog, a very surreal image. Fire may be destructive, but from the ashes new life does grow....

Hello Bob

A beautiful pastoral scene.
The lighting and mist(smoke) really create a lovely atmosphere.
I love the gently undulating grasses.

Hi Bob

A very beautiful landscape shot from you here!
I really like the time of day you chose to shoot in here - giving you that terrific patch of light on hte right side, adding a lot to the overall composition.
The view is superb and the parspective is gorgeous, the small slopes in the FG leading the viewer's eye towards the horizon.
It's a bit of a shame that you couldn't get more details and/or colors in hte sky, but even so, this is a lovely shot.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Bob. Excellent image captured by a fine D50 CMOS sensor with excellent hues along the horizon. The light catching on the pasture is just brilliant and you have composed this really well. I like it and thanks for sharing. Best regards. Jusni
