On our spring trip to Yellowstone, we had such great luck find interesting subjects to shoot. We found this Great Blue Heron fishing in the Yellowstone River and watched while he caught several small minnows. They sure can stand still, but once they take aim they strike with lightning speed.

General Description

The Great Blue Heron is the common heron of Alberta, breeding throughout the prairies and the parklands. They winter on both coasts of North America, and across the southern U.S.A.

It leaves the province in October or early November, and returns in late March or April. Occasionally one or two will linger into the winter months along a sheltered stretch of river.

The Great Blue Heron eats small fish, amphibians and small mammals. It's method of fishing is to wait perfectly still until an item of prey comes within reach, then strike and collect it in its bill.

They nest in communal heronries. Many of these have now been vacated due to human disturbance. The birds will fly from the heronry for many miles to a favoured fishing spot.

Great clarity in this photo. The colours are well saturated and so beautiful. Lovely ripples in the water. Excellent sharpness and details. Good composition and POV.
