Long story: Passing by the kitchen window that opens for me to shoot the squirrels, birds etc. yesterday morning, I glanced out and something was amiss. It didn't look right. I got my binoculars, studying the tangle of branches and limbs. Then I happened upon this little fellow. Small, about 7-10 inches in height- it took me about 3 minutes to slid the window open so as not to startle him. 15 yards away, 20 feet up in the tree. It was 5 degrees F., I set up the tripod and started to shoot. I had the 2x extender on the camera, 600mm, not counting camera sensor crop factor. Manual focus only, really hard to focus. I changed to the Canon 1.4 extender, lets me auto-focus. This shot is one of those. The 20D doesn't show ISO setting in the viewfinder so it was on 800, unbeknownst to me. But it worked out okay. I spent over 3 hours in front of the open north facing window- about froze up. I have a large bird feeder that goes right below where this little guy was setting. The other birds don't seem to like him- he doesn't even open his eyes when they give him the "fly-by".
I think he's a Western Screech Owl, seen here:

Hope you enjoy, more of him and a curious visitor to come.

Wow! not quite invisible but not far off! It's hard to spot it even in this frame let alone in real life. Great work JJ good note too. Very well done.

Hi JJ. Kind of discovery that makes your heart beating fast, running after your camera. You did very well here, as there was no other choice than to be silent and shoot under the best conditions. It's amazing to see how this chap blends into his environment. Certainly a rare occasion. Well done.

Beautiful bird.

Excellent presentation of a fantastic camouflage dress JJ. I am sure that most people would miss this owl. Well done.

Good capture, but it's hard to see the Owl, adding a bit more contrast could have been good.

Una gran captura Coyote... el nivel de mimetismo de esta ave es maravilloso al igual que la forma en que lo has retratado.
Excelente agudeza y perfecto DOF.
Gracias por compartirla.

Beatufiful post, it looks very nice in a very natural enviroment, which shows the mimetic pattern and pose of this "little fellow" as you call it. Well done.

I like this shot and lot. The image has good sharpness and DOF. A crop that is a little closer would have added to the impact of the shot.

Very well done and thanks for posting.
