[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was shooting birds feeding on scattered hen scratch with the 20D on a tripod, had the memory card out in the card reader- and saw this neat bird. The Rebel/300 was setting there with the inexpensive 70-300 Sigma on it- I handheld and got about 6 shots before the bird left. ISO 400, 300mm.

The funny thing about this shot- I never saw the squirrel until I downloaded the shot to my computer. These squirrels are extremely interested in new visitors, as is evident.
I can't for sure identify this bird, I had thought because of the head feathers it might be a Stellars Jay- there are two, I haven't got the other one yet. My book shows a darker head than this for the Stellars- maybe someone will enlighten me.
My posting has been limited by prior commitments- hopefully I'm about caught up.

Critiques [Translate]

This is Toronto's Baseball team maskot, the "Blue Jay." Go Jays go.
Excelent capture, JJ. I would have cropped it to concentrate on the Blue Jay. Anyhow, well done.

I agree with Mike, it must be the blue jay, you can just see a hint of his beautiful wing colour band ;-))
For my part I kind of like the squirrel just looking into the frame. Although there's sun, the photo exudes coldness with both jay and squirrel puffing up for warmth.

Happy new Year JJ good to see this winter image, I like it especially the squirrel peeking in on the scene, yes there is a pure shot of the blue Jay only but the furrry one adds intrest and a size referance too. Nice one for a snap capture

Happy New Year J.J. What's make the shot here is the combo with the squirrel. Even as it is, it works very well together. The bright cold sun saturates the whites and softens, but gives also a beautiful winter feeling. Amazing shot, Thanks for posting

Best for 2005, I see you are also a white beard, and love our feathered and pelted friends. I enjoyed reading your into - I also prefer comments and to comment, but when in Rome . . .
Anyway, this blue jay, I think, is beautiful and the fat squirrel juxtaposed really compliments him. In a perfecr world, you would have included the whole squrrel, but as is, I like the overall affect you have presented.
