Acorn Woodpecker
Melanerpes formicivorus
I got this shot of this female accorn woodpecker in the north eastern mountains of Arizona. I found quite a few of these woodpeckers. They grow to 9 in. and the adults usually only have one a year.These woodpecker are quite family orintated. Their is only the preeding adults and usually broods from several years.
Their food consist of fruit and nut, but mostly acorns. They drill holes in the trees of oaks to store their acorns for the winter.

Hi Tabatha,
I've never heard of the Acron Woodpecker before, but I really like all the red-crested Woodpeckers, the downy especially, probably my favourite bird. It's a nice shot, the exposure looks tricky but was managed very well. Good detail and excellent colours, a nice composition too. Really nice picture.
