[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
"All pelicans, have a unique characteristic that makes them look like they are uncomfortable, even when they are resting. Their neck looks as though it is twisted and out of place. However, that is the pelican's own special, design for its eighth vertebra is abnormally joined with the seventh and ninth so that it is physically impossible for the pelican to straighten its neck. They have adapted their own interesting and comfortable ways of resting and sleeping positions that lend to their physiology."

The California Brown Pelican pictured here have adult plumage.

"During courtship their colors become much more vibrant. The chest and head feathers become golden, the eyes which are normally a yellowish gray turn blue and the skin surrounding the eye becomes  bright pink "

I guess the colors on these birds and that one blue eye looking at me, not too subtly announces their intentions. Wouldn't it be interesting if humans changed color when they had love on the mind? It might take a lot of the strategy and guess work out of dating. : )

Very interesting POV of these resting pelicans, Evelynn.
So that is what I was supposed to find at Shell Beach?
By the time I got there, the pelicans must have left for better climes.
It is fascinating to see how their necks curve.
The colors on these breeding pelicans are just fantastic.
I think they are very beautiful.
TFS : )

Evelynn,

Nice picture with one of them lazily lifting the head to find what is happening. Nice colors.
