Passiflora incarnata
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Maypop (Passiflora incarnata), also known as the Purple Passion Flower, is a common wildflower in the southern United States. It is a fast growing perennial vine with large, intricate flowers displaying prominent styles and stamens.
The Maypop produces an oval yellowish berry about the size of a hen's egg, also called a Maypop, which becomes orange as it matures. In this species, the yellow flesh around the seeds is sweet and edible, however it is mainly consumed as larval food for a number of butterfly species.
The fresh or dried plant has been traditionally used as a herbal medicine to treat nervous anxiety and insomnia. It is mainly used in Europe by adding it to tea and a sedative chewing gum has even been produced.
The Maypop can be found in unmowed pastures, thickets, railroads and roadsides. It thrives in the Sun and will disappear if shaded by growing trees.
Other names: Wild Apricot and May Apple

Colorful and beneficial. I have used this flower as a calming agent in tea. Our family had a vine of it growing on our back porch. Truly a unique flower. Grows fast where I lived on the oceanfront of California, years ago. Nice composition!
Hi Jim,
Great colors with many details on it, nice flower and composition, TFS Regards/Lawhill

Hi Jim,
I just saw one of these a few days ago, but it did not have the deep rich colors like yours! Nice job with exposure and detail. The colors are deep and well saturated and the focus is sharp with excellent detail of this intricate flower. I am more impressed by the wild flowers I have seen lately than many of the domesticated ones. Even the dandelion and sunflower can be beautiful in nature. And, your choice of post proves the point. Nice work. (So this is the one commonly called "maypop." I did not know that).
