| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This weird image is what we could see of the robin chick that survived a few days, from the clutch of four eggs initially in the nest. It eye had not opened, and it had grown considerably. You can see the robin on the nest at Nesting Robin and the original eggs at Robin's Nest
We thought that a chipmunk had got the other eggs - last night we found a black rat snake slithering across the front steps near the nest, so maybe the chipmunk was falsely accused! Today, the chick is gone - we suspect the snake took it.
------------------
No picture of a rat snake, but the following infomation may be of interest:
Rat snakes are primarily known as rodent eaters, however, other food preferences do exist. As juveniles, rat snakes will eat small lizards, baby mice, and an occasional small frog. Adult rat snakes have a diet mainly consisting of mice and rats, but will also include chipmunks, moles, and other small rodents. Adults will also eat bird eggs and young birds that do not put up a strong fight. Rat snakes kill their prey by constriction. (Rossi 1992)
I found a study of black rat snakes eating chicks in the nest at elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v098n04/p0602-p0603.pdf |
