Good Morning

Well I have gotten a bit braver and have moved my hide deeper into the woods on my land. I found a well traveled game trail and went about cleaning it up and laying out some goodies. Found an area with some fallen trees and partially cleared paths. So I got the clippers, the leaf blower and the weed whip and went to work. After cleaning up enough so the game still had good concealment and I had a decent staging area I went about the task of laying out seeds, peanuts, corn and store bought eggs. Since I did not know what traveled this path though I believe it is deer, I decided to put out a little of everything in hopes of not coming back empty handed. Well I did too; the birds followed me out deep into the woods and gave me ample shooting opportunity while I waited for some wildlife to show. I waited for about 4 hours and was rewarded with a matting pair of Raccoons. I have taken quite a few shots too, both of them fighting, eating eggs and playing around. By the looks of the female underside she is also nursing, hope to get some shots of the kids soon. The biggest problem I have found though shooting in the woods is the dappled light, shadows and literally places where it looks like a flood light is shinning down from the openings in the trees. I had to go manual and use fill flash to compensate for the varying degrees of light. Also it is a bit unnerving sitting in the woods for several hours by yourself waiting to see what shows up. Thankfully the only thing I really have to worry about in Delaware is poisonous snakes as there is no cougars or bears in this state! ;) See you out on the site, hope to have some real nice shots to show in the next couple of posts.

Greg

Physical Setup:

1. Setup the hide near a well traveled game path.
2. Hid corn, eggs, peanuts and seeds in the fallen trees and in the leaves on the ground.
3. As soon as something would show up I would fire several shots; validate the exposure, then fire off some more.

Wow he's a mean looking critter! Beautiful shot here though Greg. There seems to be a bit of a warm cast overall. Maybe tone down the white balance a bit?

Hi Greg,
Your efforts today produced an outstanding nature shot. I love this photo for it's natural setting and for the pose and expression of the raccoon. The details are amazing. I know you are working in challenging light conditions which, I think, you are managing well. However, there does seem to be a yellowish tint to this one. I did a workshop to try for a more natural color, but i cannot post it until tomorrow. (Reached my limit).

I see a lot of raccoons, and have yet to get anything decent. This is by far the nicest capture of one I have seen. The exposed teeth and pose it is in are excellent.Your work paid off for sure.

Greg, this is fantastic!

I've actually seen pictures taken in the Zoo that don't look as good as this!
What a great idea to ge deeper in the woods for more kinds of subjects!
The photos itself is simply flawless! The light (and its compensation), the colors, the details and the DOF are ALL perfect!
The pose of the raccoon here is also great and the face expression is worth millions!!! Terrific timing!
What else can i say except: a favorite! Definitely!

At first I didn't know if the racoon was smiling or was mad, it's as if he is showing his teeth for fun! Thank you so much and see you soon I hope,

Hi Greg,

Superb shot of the Raccoon and well worth your 4hr wait, its a beautifully composed shot and I like the pose with the Raccoon showing his teeth, really nice sharp detail and wonderful colours, I like the dappled lighting in the BG too. I look forward to seeing some young ones soon, I don't think I have ever seen one before.

TFS Hilary :o)

Perfect shot.
crisp clear despite the 200 ISO.
beautiful light and colors
Nice pose and expression.
TFS

Rad raccoon, it looks like he want to take more than a bite of the seed. Yes, dappled lighting has ruined what could've been nice shots of mine as well, but your fill in flash is a great remmedy for this situation. Great shot Gregory. I have not seen your wife post lately? :)
