This is Punaluu Beach. One of several black sand beaches locted in the Hawaiian Islands. This beach is located on the southern tip of the big island, not far from Volcanos National Park. Ocean currents keep this beach supplied with jet black sand fron the not to distant lava fields. The black sand(Crushed lava) appears coarse, but is very soft to walk on. This beach is a favorite of the endangered Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle for basking and nesting. The signs you see posted warn people not to disturb them.

Taking black sand is prohibited, but local tradition says that if any of the black sand from Punalu'u beach is taken away from Hawaii
the person that took it will be cursed until it is returned. The same is said about the local volcanic rocks. There are stories about people that ignored this warning and took sand and lava home. These people had such bad luck, that they actually mailed the sand and lava back, asking that someone return it back to the beach.

I did not take any, but my luck was bad there as a small storm blew off the volcano. I tried to wait out the clouds and dull sky, but no luck. After a couple of hours, I had to move on.
I know the sky is bad and colors are alittle dull, but The beauty of this place still comes thru. Waited out on the lava rocks in the surf for 30 minutes before I could get a shot with no humans in it. Like most beaches, this is a state park, and a very popular place.

I think your 30 minute wait was worth it though. I love the sharp, dark quality of the lava rocks here. The green of the palms really stand out with all this black. Nice action with the water splashing up on the rocks. Well done. I'll probably never make it to Hawaii so thanks for sharing this.

Scott, this is a very inviting picture. 1/8 really worked well here. Nice effect on the water, pleasant shades of green and perfect sharpness.

I love the contrast of the black and green, a really great shot - worth the wait.
It looks like it could do with a tiny bit of straightening up, or is that just me?
Thanks for sharing.

Good capture, but I would just clone out the signs.
Well done.
TFS.

Nice shot Scott, very unusual beach. The water looks good at this speed. Nice details and sharpness.
