Double-crested Cormorant
Phalacrocorax auritus

Cormoran à aigrettes (French)
Cormorán Orejudo, Cormorán Bicrestado, Corúa de Mar (Spanish)

The Double-crested Cormorant is the most numerous and widespread North American cormorant. It's also the only one that occurs in large numbers inland as well as on the coast. Growing in numbers throughout its range, this cormorant is increasingly being blamed for declines in sport fisheries and for devastating fish farms.

Cool Facts:
The Double-crested Cormorant makes a bulky nest of sticks and other materials. It frequently picks up junk, such as rope, deflated balloons, fishnet, and plastic debris to incorporate into the nest. Parts of dead birds are commonly used too.
Large pebbles are occasionally found in cormorant nests, and the cormorants treat them as eggs.
Double-crested Cormorant nests often are exposed to direct sun. Adults shade the chicks and also bring them water, pouring it from their mouths into those of the chicks.
In breeding colonies where the nests are placed on the ground, young cormorants leave their nests and congregate into groups with other youngsters (creches). They return to their own nests to be fed.
Accumulated fecal matter below nests can kill the nest trees. When this happens, the cormorants may move to a new area or they may simply shift to nesting on the ground.

Hi ManYee

A lovely pose for a great shot from this amazing green-eyed (almost I said monster) aquatic bird. This bird sure knew how to strut its feathers for you.

I like the composition and POV with the bird entering the shot via the bottom corner with the neck and head (obviously the eye too) snugly in the region of the 1/3 vertical plane. The OOF surface area of the water created an excellent BG that enhanced the bird and made it stand out on the shot. The details are well defined and were to a large extent aided by the f/8 aperture selection that ensured an excellent DOF range. The lovely well saturated colours provide the shot with vital visual stimulus while the exposure levels ensured great lighting and well defined contrasts on the bird’s plumage.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. I'll hopefully catch up with my outstanding e-mail responsibilities by tonight. I need to tell you about my next Kruger trip (there, I've leaked the news).

Great portrait Manyee
Pin sharp and good composition
Well done

Hallo Manyee

Only one word – Beautiful.
I am not good at writing critiques as my special friend Loot, so please know that everything he said in his critique I agree on. But in the same breath I must admit I do not understand everything what he is saying, but because I have learn to know him via Trek Nature, I am sure he is right.
I like the different colours. The black feathers of the bird, the blue-green background of the water, the orange in the beak and most of all the striking green colour of the eye. I to enjoyed your note and the information provided was a big +.
Thanks for sharing, much appreciated.
Regards
Aaltjie.

Ps. I see he has made a small note of a trip to Kruger National Park. How can one person be so lucky?

Hi Manyee,
An excellent portrait on this Double-crested Cormorant, I love the profile as he sits drying his wings. Great quality light. The colors and detail in the plumage look amazing. well composed and frame coming in from the right like that.

hi Manyee

belle réussite que cette prise de vue de cormoran. Le cadrage et le moment choisi pour déclenché permet de bien occuper l'espace. La netteté est parfaite avec un oeil vif et coloré.

Great shot, light, Pose, Note and Detail. Wonderful focus on the eyes, that usually are a little more bluish. The ones at my favorite "hunting" ground to nest as high as they can - and are hard to get close to. The more reason for me to like this!

Cool looking cormorant Manyee, the wing opened like that displays the primaries and secondaries nicely and that emerald eye is gorgeous. :)
