[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a sunrise from the top of Haleakala Volcano, on the Island of Maui. The elevation at the summit is 10,000 feet. Haleakala in Hawaiian means "House Of The Sun". Haleakala National Park is a popular destination on the Island of Maui. Many people come for the spectacular sunrises and sunsets above the clouds. The park has plants and animals found no other place in the world.

The trip to the top is a 1.5 - 2 hour, 38 mile drive on steep swithback roads. The weather is below freezing until after the sun rises, and extremely windy.

I picked this photo from about 30 diffrent photos I took over the span of about 30 minutes waiting for the sunrise. The amount of cloud cover usually has a great effect on how your photos will turn out. On this morning they were just average according to the park rangers, but the experience was off the chart. I think the picture gives you an idea of what it was like.

Scott, that's what I'd call a brilliant shot.

Wow, what a breathtaking view. I've only been over Haleakola in a helicopter. I now wish I'd done the bike ride down the mountain because I'll probably never go back to Maui.
