The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is a large, colourful parrot.
It is native to humid evergreen forests in the American tropics, from extreme eastern Mexico locally to Amazonian Peru and Brazil, in lowlands up to 500 meters (at least formerly up to 1000m). It has been widely extirpated by habitat destruction and capture for the pet trade. Formerly it ranged north to southern Tamaulipas. It can still be found on the island of Coiba. It is also the Honduran national bird.
Scarlet Macaws originate in the humid lowland subtropical rain forests, open woodlands, river edges, and savannas of Central and South America. The habitat of the Central American Scarlet Macaw runs through the extreme eastern and southern regions of Mexico and Panama, but also through Guatemala and Belize, while the South American population has an extensive range that covers the Amazon basin; extending to Peru east of the Andes, to Bolivia, and Paraguay.[1] While generally infrequent on the mainland, great colonies of Scarlet Macaws can still be found on the islands of Coiba and Galápagos.
Before the Scarlet Macaw's decline in population, its distribution included much of Costa Rica. However, by the 1960s Scarlet Macaws had been decreasing in numbers due to a combination of factors, particularly hunting, poaching, and the destruction of habitat through deforestation. Further, the spraying of pesticides by companies cultivating and selling bananas for export played a significant role in decreasing Scarlet Macaw populations.

Thanks again to every body, and have good week end

Hi Lawhill,

A striking capture of this Macaw. Colors are wonderful - details are sharp and clear. Background and frame are perfect. The face and expression are priceless. What beautiful wings he has!

Whoa! This is a moment for sunglasses! The exposure, sharpness, detail and colors are fantastic here. I think the stark white frame is a bit much. Light colors advance and dark colors recede. Here the the white jumps out at the viewer. I think if you had chosen a midtone shade for the frame ( including the red inner frame), your parrot would look even more three dimensional and even more dramatic.

Brilliant colours and detail. I think you still would have had as much of this detail without so much sharpening though. One thing that is outstanding on this is the position of his head in relation to the wing.. A true pose for you. TFS

This is a remarkable capture! The colors and composition are incredible. The thing that stumps me, considering myself a fairly good psittacine identifier, is what this bird is a mix of. A true scarlet wouldn't have that strong a green in it, and to have some on the head too is a little off. It's almost like this scarlet was a mix of a scarlet and a green-wing, because those too are so alike anyway. And, the size can be deceiving here too, because the top beak makes it look like it has green-wing in there, but there are no facial markings from the green-wing side. Well, it's a great shot with gorgeous colors!
