Butterfly on Lantana

I have seen very few butterflys this summer but finally captured this pretty one although I don't know its identification. A break from the finches!

Thanks to Batu for identifying this as Chlosyne lacinia.

From Butterflys and Moths of North America

Upperside is black with a very wide orange or cream median band and small orange or white postmedian spots. Underside of hindwing is black with a yellow to cream-colored median band, small white postmedian spots, and large cream-colored marginal spots. Red spot near abdomen is usually separate from the median band.

It is found from Argentina north through Mexico to Texas and southeastern New Mexico, west through Arizona to southern California, north to southeastern Nevada. Casual migrant to Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas; rarely to western Missouri.

Wow, congratulations Jane!!
I'm glad you've got hold of a butterfly at last as well! This one is a real beauty and I love its pose amongst those pretty Lantana flowers. Pretty good sharpness and wonderful colours. A really nice composition!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Jane,
cette macro est composée de très belles couleurs et une bonne profondeur de champ.
Le papillon est bien positionné au sommet de l'image.
Roland

Your shot is well framed and gives us a good look at this attractive butterfly, but there's a strange softness to the whole image that spoils it a bit.
It looks to me like you applied some over-aggressive noise reduction, which has caused a loss of fine detail throughout the image. I think a sharper image, even with lots of digital noise, would have worked a lot better. If you didn't use noise reduction in your PP, then try setting in-camera noise reduction to it's minimum setting, or even better turn it off completely. I'm sure your images will benefit from it.

Cheers,
Ben

Hello Jane,
Very beautiful 1st butterfly, I love how you captured it going deep in the flower and the blurred BG. Great POV, very well composed, and excellent sharpness.

Everton.

Jane,

I have added my critique to Batu / Peter's message to you.

I'm sorry but I cannot agree with the comments above me that say how sharp your photo is.

The butterfly has shaky marks all around it. It isn't sharp.

I hope you will read this, and understand that truth is better then hollow praise.

Ben4321 has given you an excellent critique, and so has Batu in his message to you. Please take note of them both. You seem to have a love for taking photos, so I'm sure you'll find them very helpful.

Cheers
Janice

PS. If you need any help or suggestions, I am always keen to help.

...and you did a mighty fine job! You're just good with 'winged things.' :)

And it's a nice beginning Jane, strong composition, good light, great background and well focused. A bit of noise though but a great shot anyway ! Thanks,

Mario

Hi Jane,
Your first butterfly shot is just wonderful. It gives us an impression of what is going to come. here, on the beautiful lantanas it sits elegantly, busy sucking nectar. Lovely colours and patterns on its wings and it stands out well against the BG. Excellent POV to portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

bonjour Jane
ça y est tu as chopé le virus de la macro :D tant mieux pour nous car je suis sûr que les images vont me plaire.
Malgré du bruit résiduel et un papillon dans la feuille, les couleurs sont vraiment agréables, la composition soignée.

Hi Jane
A good photo, nice use of thirds. It is a little grainy but still a good shot. with nice colours.
regards
Matt.

Congratulations on your first butterfly image, Jane.
I think you have done a good job here.
Very good point of view and lovely colors on the butterfly.
I think Ben has a point regarding some kind of compression noise in the picture. You could certainly find out why and remedy it in your next effort.
Best regards.

Hi Jane,
A beautiful capture of this butterfly. Nice POV and very good composition. Sorry don't know the ID. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hola Jane,

Hello Jane,
Great that you have started photographing butterflies!
Peter is right about the ID: the English name is Scudder's Patched Butterfly. The colors and composition are excellent, but there is a kind of softness about this image.
Look forward to seeing more butterfly shots from you!
TFS,
Ivan

Hi Jane,

A great shot of this butterfly, good compo, I like it, well done.
