Obscure Bird Grasshopper
Schistocerca obscura

The Bird Grasshopper, sometimes called the Bird-Wing(ed) Grasshopper, is so called because it has large wings and flies around like a bird.

Obscure Bird Grasshopper

aka:
The Hoppy Green Giant
Biggas bugus

Thanks again to Ivan(Argus) for help with the ID

While sitting on the patio running cool water over my head from the garden hose after finishing mowing the lawn, I was surprised by a large UFO buzzing around above me. At first sight I thought it was a hummingbird. But, to my disappointment, it was a large...a very large grasshopper. Close to 3 inches(7.6 cm) in length. As usual, I have searched with no success to find the ID of this critter. All insects should be required by law to have their ID printed on their abdomens and displayed in full view at all times. That's what I think. ;-)

bonjour jim
la netteté est bonne sur le criquet, les couleurs naturelles mais je trouve un peu dommage que l'ombre soit aussi visible.

Hello Jim,
Brilliant capture of this grasshopper all in focus from a low POV! Very sharp details and I like its bright colours. Sorry, I don't know ID of American species.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Great shot here! Good clear details and wonderful colors. If I knew how to identify grasshoppers, this one is photographed so sharply, it would be easy to id.
Good work! :)

Hola Jim,
Precioso ejemplar de saltamontes, bonita luz y color, excelente definición, saludos

This is an amazingly sharp image of this big fellow. I love all the detail. Maybe you should take it on as a life's work... to id tag all the insects you find.... well maybe all the ones over 3 inches. The colors and details are wonderful.

Hi Jim,
A beautiful grasshopper you have captured. Excellent composition with nice details and POV. Thanks a lot for sharing.

A great surprise capture. Those are the best a lot of times. I couldn't ID him either, although there is a Green Grasshopper pottery place in Maine. :-) Sorry. Excellent flash work. Good color and clarity. Well done.

TFS!

Hello Jim,
I missed your latest shots for some reason. This one is first rate, the flash bringing out the colors well and helping to highlight it by the BG shadow. Nice and sharp too.
My research has led me to a Bird Grasshopper called the Alutacea Bird grasshopper (Schistocerca alutacea). The ID feature is the yellow line down the middle of the back. It's a type of Bird grasshopper because it has long wings and flies like a bird!
TFS,
Ivan
