The Carpenter Bee

Another photo from Sundance Garden. Carpenter bees are non-aggressive and the female will sting only if threatened, the male worker doesn't have a stinger. Unlike the Honeybee, whose barbed stinker remains implanted in it's victim, the female Carpenter bee is capable of stinging multiple times. They get the name "Carpenter Bee" because of the habit of nesting primarily in rotting timber or wood. Carpenter bees use bits of wood to build the cell walls of the nest. Mothers and daughters often build nests side-by-side. The Carpenter bee will slit the sides of trumpet like flowers with deep corollas to gain access to the nectar. Although often mistaken for a Bumblebee, the Carpenter bee's abdomen is shiny black and hairless while the Bumblebee's abdomen is completely covered with dense black and yellow hair.

Hello Jim,
Brilliant capture of this Carpenter Bee showing very sharp details. I like its pose on the pretty orange flower and the soft green background sets it off very nicely. A lovely composition in beautiful colours.

I find this a very interesting shot Jim. It is so simple and effective. Your bee is awesome in its sharpness. The slightly softer bright flower against the really out of focus greens. Nice work
