[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Argus has identified this as a Broad-headed Bug. Alydidae Coreoidea. As he says they are plant feeders and give off a foul smell when disturbed. Thanks to Argus!!

(I left my original post intact.) Is this another one of those creatures that seems to be one thing and turns out to be another? You know, like the cross between a hummingbird and a bumblebee that turns out to really be a moth. :-)

This one behaves like a wasp. It's agile instead of leaping off in great crashes. But when you look at those large back legs, you would think it's some kind of a hopper. And the head is unusual.

So, thanks to the spot on its back, I'm dubbing it a white spot grasshopper wasp. I'll get out the latin dictionary later.

It'll probably turn out to be a hummingbird. :-)

Hope you enjoy.
Reid

Hi Raid,
A very clear capture of this insect!
I like the upper view of it, in which all its parts can be seen with plenty of good details.
It's very good also the composition you made with the leave and the green it adds to the image.
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

If you get much closer you will be able to see the cellular makeup of the leaf. Nice composition with the insect on the edge of the leaf. Centered makes it a tad too perfect.. There is something as too good... at least in my mind.

Hello Reid,
You pose another insect problem!
This is a True Bug (Hemiptera) and is one of several species of Broad-headed Bugs (family Coriscidae). Broad-headed bugs are plant feeders and give off an unpleasant smell when disturbed.
Nice clear and well composed macro.
Well done and TFS!
Ivan

Very fine capture of this but climbing along the edge of the leaf. Great sharpness and fine natural colours. Excellent composition.

Hi Mr. Reid,
Actually it is a stink bug of some type. You have captured it very nicely. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
HP

Hi Reid,
A fine capture of the strange looking insect. You have a knack for finding the unusual. Well done.

Good composition on the edge of the leaf. Like it that we get the details not only of the insect but also the veins and striations of the leaf.
Good color contrasts.
