Another quick dip into my archives for an image taken almost two years ago.

I was captivated by the sight of these busy little birds running back and forth with the ebb and flow of the waves, seeming to chase the foam. I tried a number of times to capture them, but was hampered by the phenomenally slow shutter of the Coolpix I was using then. This is one of the few that came close to being good. They move with amazing speed, so that there is motion blur even at the high speed of this shot.

This is a juvenile Sanderling (Calidris alba), new to my inland eyes, but actually one of the most common of all shore birds, found on nearly all temperate and tropical sandy beaches around the world. They're very gregarious, generally seen in small flocks doing their dance with the sea. Their race with the waves allows them to find and consume minute crabs and invertebrates dropped onto the sand by the foaming sea.

Thanks for visiting and for your critiques and comments.

Hi Silke,
A new batch of food with every wave and probably this beautiful bird was trying to catch that everytime. Wonderful shot with sharp details on its plumage. The harsh lighting is well managed here and I like its attentive pose. The foam on the upper left hand corner presents a fine effect and illustrates the setting well. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Excellent portrait of the bird. Good sharpness. I like the water in the background.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Silke,
This is a very clear capture of this bird!
It's very good the pose caught on it, in this walking moment and standing on one leg.
You did it great with the exposure to get this, in despite the fast movements of the bird.
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Wonderful point of view, Silke.
You have got perfect details on the bird's plumage.
Thanks and take care.

Hi Silke,
Without sounding condescending, I think you've done an excellent job with the Coolpix. Every camera has it's limitations. But not every camera is used up to it's limits, as seen here.
I appreciate your determination in getting this one..I can just see you chasing these birds along the sand :)
Very well done.
Howard

Hello Silke,
I like this POV and unusual composition, this is original. There is a nice sense of movement in this picture. Exposure is good too. The only thing missing in my humble opinion is a little catch-light in its eye but I know that we can't always do what we want with animal’s pictures :) Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Silke
What a fine detailed capture..the framing is brilliant showing the sea and a superb shadow under the sanderling. tfs

Hello Silke,
You've succeeded really well in catching this little Sanderling as it is running along the beach. Good focus on the bird in beautiful light. Very nice composition too.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Have I seen my share of these. A nice memory for me. Am hoping to get back there next year for good. Wonderful how clear this picture is and there is no mistaking the sand and waves. In its natural home!

Wow, Silke, what a capture!
Superb shot of a juvenile Sanderling with great lighting and sharpness and I like the way you composed it to show its typical habitat with the apt title coming into its own.
Well done and TFS!
Ivan

Hello Silke

A lovely shot,I really like how you kept the water in the shot. The bird is well focused with very good plumage details. The lighting is excellent, and from the shadow the sun must be high on the horizon. The bird is well exposed.TFS

Rob

Hi Silke,
Excellent shot of the little bird. Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

Jim

Hi Silke,

A nice image of the Sanderling, the photo has a good composition, sharpness and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.

Pierre

I like the way it's composed. The motion is visible in the waves and gives the bird a sense of scurrying down the beach...which it is, I believe. Right?
Good lighting and great contrasts. Another good un! :)
