Morro Rock is located a few hundred feet off the shore of Morro Bay, California. The domed hill stands about 575 feet tall at the entrance to the Morro Bay Harbor. At the time of its discovery in 1542, it was completely surrounded by water and apparently resembled a pebble to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who gave it its Spanish name, “El Morro” (“the pebble”). Today there is a manmade sandspit that connects the rock to the mainland creating a sheltered harbour.

This pink dome is the most westerly of a chain of nine volcanic peaks known as the Nine Sisters and is the smallest of the nine. The peaks were created over 20 million years ago when magma (molten rock) welled up and solidified inside a much softer rock that has since eroded. In effect, these were the plugs created as volcanic activity slowed down and the magma cooled.

The rock was not originally as rounded as you see here. It was described in 1861 by Professor William Brewer of Yale University as “rising like a pyramid from the waters” a depiction which sadly no longer holds true.
Quarrying activities in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries created the rounded shape of this rock. However it has been protected by law since 1968 and is today also a bird sanctuary and a breeding ground for the Peregrine Falcon.

Thanks for looking and for reading this far :D and many thanks for your critiques on the photo itself.

Fantastic. This is my first look at this very important piece of geology. Lots of natural action in the years you speak of as to how this was transformed.
Bob

Well, leave it to a foreigner to educate a native Californian!!! I never knew that about Morro Rock. I always thought it was a natural shape. You managed lots of good details in it and nice color. I would like the water line to be more level.

Hello Silke,
Superb lighting in this shot of 'El Morro' showing the rock colorsin their full splendour. Nice composition with the BG mts and sky. Looks like the white dots on the water in the Fg must be gulls.
Must look this up in the atlas to locate it.
TFS and have a nice weekend,
Ivan

Hello Silke,

What an inposing and dramatic shot! The tones of colour on the rock are quite lovely! The tones of colour in the distance are equally lovely!

Interesting notes, my friend!
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

What an interesting landmark! Great capture...the rise of Morro over the blue water is majestic!

Hello Silke,
An interesting rock formation!
The rock stands out well in the fine light, nice composition with a fine feeling of depth...
Attractive colours, sharp fine details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Silke.
This shot is a little better. I like the coposition and subject better and the dodge halo isn't as obvious, however it is still there. The colour and light are great too. Just be careful when dodging and burning not to overlap your tool into dark or bright areas beyond the feature you're working on. When you find yourself getting close to the edge, try a smaller tool and enlarge the work area so you can be more precise. Hope my critiques are more of a help than a hindrance. Well done.
Best regards, Steve.
