Strange scene. Interesting to look at.
I'm not sure that ants can take down a young healthy cicada. Maybe this one was wounded, aged or cold, which may impaire the salvation by taking off. Good you let it to the ants. The repeated bytes were probably enough to ensure a delayed death, anyway. That is an enormous meal. It makes their day.

Hello Reid,
An interesting capture and fine contribution to TN. One can speculate about why the ants attacked the Cicada in the first place but it certainly shows yet another struggle with death as part of life. The ants show up well in this shot and one can make out the comparitively huge cicada. Would they be able to take it to their heap?
As a coincidence I took a couple of shots of a Black Woodpecker this morning: it was eating ants! Quality was poor though so I doubt if I would post it.
TFS and have a fine weekend!

Wow...interesting and kinda scary, isn't it? Like a cicada nightmare.
Very very interesting.

And to think it had waited all that time to be around. Life is dangerous even in the insect world and your picture stories brings it all into perspective in both ways.

Hi Reid,
combined with your workshop, you've shown quite a struggle here! You did well to find this mini battle amogst the undergrowth and capture it so well. Great exposure and detail, lots to see in this one.

Hi Reid,
Exceptional capture of a trajic event. I'm kind of partial to Cicadas, they remind me of summer days of my childhood. Great color, detail and exposure. A really fine photo.

Hi Reid,
Just marking this one for writing a proper critique later. Sorry, absolutely tied up, it seems I have got to do a lot of writing over the weekend.

Hi Mr. Reid,
A very good capture of these tiny little ants getting over a giant Cicada. Sorry for the cicada. Both this and WS are well captured and presented. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Sincerely

Hi Reid,
Interesting post and WS mf.
Great sharpness & detail, with good DOF.
It looks to me like the "killing" part is over, and this is the first shift of the clean-up crew :)
TFS & Have a great weekend!
