Interesting Fact: The female Garter Snake will eat only male prey

Garter Snake...Taxonomy

As I was trying to get a good photo of the frogs, I kept seeing a small Garter Snake circling the pond. It would slither in and out of the bushes and rocks as it seemed to be checking out the situation. Finally it entered the water and swam to some lily pads. I assumed it was waiting for a dragonfly or butterfly to make the fatal mistake of flying too close. A tourist couple passing the garden decided to stop. As they approached, I moved away from the pond hoping they wouldn't scare away the frog or snake. As we were discussing the different butterflies in the area there was a sudden commotion from the pond. Loud splashing and frantic croaking broke the serene silence. I quickly ran close to the pool and saw the poor snake trying desperately to keep a grasp on the thrashing frog. It was a battle soon lost by the over-matched snake. In defeat, it slithered out of the pond and back into the bushes. Unprepared, I was able to get one quick out-of-focus shot of the battle. It can be seen in workshop-Part 3.

*Garter Snakes are harmless and make good pets along with helping keep your garden/flower bed free of pests. Please be aware of the type of Garter Snake that inhabits your particular area and refrain from destroying them. Thanks :-)

Hi Jim. A very fine detailed shot of the snake. with rich colours . you have done well with the refection of the light not an easy shot to take. well done TFs. good notes too
Nick..

have a good weekend.

There is an almost painted, or hmmmmm...maybe it looks almost like film quality. It has a very unusual blending of color and pixels. Nicely done. Now if I can figure out how you did it:-)

Thanks for recording this confrontation for us! From the looks of image three, I would have bet on the snake. It's great to see things like this with a camera. Well done.

Hi Jim,
a nice capture of this Garter Snake.
+++ Great POV and composition, brilliant colours.
--- The noise reduction has decreased some of the detail but otherwise perfect :)
Great shot.
The photo of the battle has a lot of movement which is very effective.
Well done,

Hi Jim,
A beautiful water snake. And relaxed to know it is harmless. I also liked the WS "Battle". Though its a bit noisy but a rare to see shot. Very well done. Thanks a lot for sharing. This is a nice work.

Hi Jim,
really nice and natural "candid" shot of this garter snake, the focus is not everything, but the composition is excellent, I really love the combination between snakes, water lilies and dark but gloomy water, the reflection in water also giving an artistic touch as we could see it look like it been painted, the notes also great, I'm interested with the fact that the female species will always prey male victim, its kinda natural wonder

Wow Jim,
What a nice perspective and beautiful composition. This almost looks like a cartoon! I love those tones of colors and beautiful environment. This low POV is perfect. This is very nice and well done, congrats!
Claudine
