[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The snake jmirah published yesterday reminded me about this image. It's a snake in a pile of weeds created by the county mower.

It's a big snake. Maybe five feet or so. I saw him going into the pile and took the photo I have inset in the top-left corner. Then I saw his head come poking out of the right side of the pile. I put a closeup of his head in the lower-right corner. Doesn't look poisonous to me.

In the large image his tail is on the left and his head barely visible on the right. And there we were. We stayed this way for a number of minutes until he finally darted out and went into the woods.

I wonder if 1) was the snake doing this looking for food, 2) was it enjoying the heat in this big pile, or 3) was it laying eggs in the pile? I will add a workshop image so you can see how large a pile this is.

Hi Reid,
Excellent eye in spotting this outstanding regal snake. There are only four types of poisoness snakes naturally occuring in the US and three are pit vipers easily identified by their triangular head(rattlesnake, copperhead and cottonmouth). The fourth is kin to the cobra, the coral snake which is very small and easily identified by it's red, yellow and black bands. Remember, "red touch yellow, kill a fellow...red touch black, a friend to Jack"...In East Texas we call the snake with red touching black bands a Milk Snake which is a type of King Snake and harmless. Anyway, very nicely done, capturing the snake exploring the pile of leaves and grass. Great clarity and fine exposure showing good detail. Very well done.

He he....okay. Doesn't look poisonous. Well now I'm convinced. NOT. Anyway as per th epic, it is an interestingly lucky capture of it in almost hiding, but perhaps foraging for a frog or some such rat or mouse...hmmm...I do know there are a few poisonous variety in your area, but truthfully I believe you are right. Perhaps it is a Bull Snake, but it looks a big small. The length is somewhat puzzling though. You have set the mood for intrigue.

The insets are nice for bringing attention to the details you wanted us to notice since the full photo would have been hard to see those details. Nice job.

A great capture of this camouflaging snake. Yes you are right it is barely visible unless you look carefully. And the inset describes well how the snake looks. My suggestion let it venomous or non venomous you should be careful. Thanks a lot for sharing.
