I cried over beautiful things knowing no beautiful thing lasts.

The field of cornflower yellow is a scarf at the neck of the copper sunburned woman, the mother of the year, the taker of seeds.

The northwest wind comes and the yellow is torn full of holes, new beautiful things come in the first spit of snow on the northwest wind, and the old things go, not one lasts. -Carl Sandburg

Picture is of wild Prairie Grass on the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge.

What is it about prairies? What is interesting us so about these grasslands that circle our lands with a wide swath? Certainly there are landscapes such as the Rockies, , the Pacific coastline and others which make much more spectacular scenes. In contrast, these grasslands appear flat and somewhat bland; Yes quite vast but not as a ancient redwood forest or a mountain pond with Aspens.

...but in America the rolling grasslands are one of our most distinctive and defining landscapes. Carl Sandburg and many others have celebrated the prairie in verse as seen above. Our national songs refer to the 'endless prairie' and 'the fruited plain.'

Jesuit Priests were the first Europeans to see these grasslands and named the place as well as they could. Prerie was their word . Back in France it meant grassland. When Pere Marquette emerged from dark northern forests into the sunny, game-rich savannas of the Mississippi Valley in 1673, it may have been something like coming home, and he noted 'les belles preries' in his journal.

The original tall grass prairie comprised an area from northern Indiana to Texas to Saskatchewan, Canada, comprising about one-third of America. Before settlement, about two-thirds of the vegetation in what is now the state of Washington was natural grasslands. The prairie held about 150 kinds of grasses. No more than 10 were dominant in their special niches.

Hi Bob, lovely golden tones here...the soft background gives an almost dreamy effect. Your note reminds us how the US's history is tightly entwined with it's huge landscapes. Rocky peaks and ancient forests are great, but there's something slightly sublime about those Prairies..
tfs and have a good weekend
Paul

Hi Bob,
This is an artistic masterpiece. The wild prairie grass looks majestic in its formation and you have captured them in all their glory. The OOF BG looks stunning and sets up a nice tone to the shot. I wish I could capture something like this sometime - truely charming. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Very fine posting with the poetry and the excellent information and this beautiful image of wild grass. The amber waves of grain have been an integral part of this nation since its inception. Excellent composition.

Hi Bob!

I almost missed that one... And how I would regret it! I love it for what you master so perfectly well: simplicity and authenticity, underlined by interesting and deep comments.

From the technical point of view, there's nothing to say: the composition with the blurred background is perfect, the colors are great and bribing, the lighting management is wonderful, and the whole is nicely framed.

Well seen, well done!

Thank you, Bob, for sharing it with us.

Kind regards
Markus

Top-to-bottom, side-to-side lovely, Bob. Simple and elegant. Walt Whitman would've been proud to paint such an image as this in words. You've let us see it. Great use of DOF and macro view, tasteful framing, fine color and sharpness. An excellent compositional example of where less is more.

Hi Bob,
Beautiful composition of the grass seed heads.
The DOF with the blurry BG is superb and adds so much to the image. The patterns and colors are very pleasing.
TFS
Richard

Hi Bob,
Amazing such a thing as a simple stalk of wheat can be such a beautiful photo. But it can and you've proved it. The close up with the great detials and the blended background...beautiful. TFS
