pinus edulis. Common name: Piñon pine. These rugged trees seem to grow anywhere almost magically. They survive with little rainfall (often lower than 8 inches annually), and they can be found in both fertile ground as well as growing right out of the sanstone, like this one.

These trees are extremely important to wildlife, providing shelter and food in the form of nuts or the leaves themselves for hundry deer. Human animals love the nuts!

Pinus edulis is found all over the higher elevations of the desert southwest in the U.S. Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico all find this species abundant.

Though not valuable for lumber, early pioneers valued the tough, rot-resistant wood for making their barns and sheds. It is very difficult to get good carpentry wood out of this tree, since it is coursely grained and splits so easily. I prefer to just look at them, anyway.

Hi David
Aonther nice one from the dry land, good to see what this looks like, a lovely pic. I would run the pic through S/H in CS, to bing out some of the detail in the darker parts of the FG, no real nit, just an observation, nice POV and texture, TFS
PS, Yes, I will shoot anything, given the chance. But sometimes, the aim is npt 100%, like a spider in the breeze!

David, excellent composition and vivid colors. Great contrasts everywhere.

A grea job indeed.

Good posting and note, David.
I especially like the warm rich colors that you have managed well against the dark blue sky. Good use of the polarizer.
Rene's ws is very good and brings out a few more details that are worth seeing. Thank you for a wonderful image.

It is dark but polorizer gave nice color to this photo and made it nicer.TFS.Keep Shooting

The tree seems to have undergone some wounds because branches miss. It looks like it grows in the stone, what an environment! I like the effect of the polarizing but Rene's WS completed your photo by balancing colours and contrasts. TFS

TFS
