[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have been in the city and gone from my wilderness now for 477 days. But who's counting? That's 1 year and four months. I feel like an inmate on death row...crossing off the days and counting. Sitting in front of a computer is much different than bucking wood for the week ahead, putting soup on the wood cookstove and getting some sand ready to put out for tomorrows sure to come frost.

These two Canadian Geese were sometimes at home on this island, in the dead of winter with the river frozen up. Unlike most species who all migrate south during winter, I suppose some Canadian Geese think 10 miles S of the border is south enough. Since there is nothing up the river but ice, I suspect they were looking, feeling and instinctively knowing that warmer days were not coming soon. With their home so close, they almost appear to be longing to fly north. And so I am feeling about the same way as I sit and type these notes......Wiki says "In mild climates, such as the Pacific Northwest, due to a lack of former predators, some of the population has become non-migratory." and it goes on to say that they are considered pests in large eastern cities...How can a native bird be a pest. Methinks it is humans who are the pests! And wrong again in calling the Pacific NW mild...hardly so with exception of Seattle. Here on the East side it is well below zero for much of the winter...

The small island is about 500 feet from me and my camera. I am not able to get closer because the ice is very thin in some places where the flow is strong. I had my Nikon F5 body with a Fuji name on it...and digital electronics...and a 85mm lens which is all that I could muster. I did have a Tamron long lens but this particular Tamron was not too sharp without a tripod. the 85mm retains the colors well.

I suppose this picture is to let you know that some birds do not migrate far...a few more of this species do and did...but these two are I guess the guardians or scouts... risking their lives to telepath the message when the freeze lets go of its hold...

Happy 41st Anniversary to my wife Jane

Hi Bob,
i can only try to empathise for your longing to be back in the wilderness...i grew up in the countryside, and whilst it was no where near as wild or as challenging as where you come from, i know what it's like to feel a bit lost amongst the urban sprawl sometimes. I hope to escape back asap.
This is a great image and i like the thought behind it, it portrays it very well. Nicely framed with the tree overhanging and the thick crust of ice in the BG. Congrats to you and your wife too on an awesome milestone.

Hi Bob,
I may only be young but I also feel a huge desire to escape from my normal routined life in urban areas and travel around from one country to another. I think I just really need a veeeeerrrry long holiday one of the Balearic Islands or something. These two Canada Geese look like they're waiting for something very important.
A very nice shot overall.
Best regards and congratulations on your 41st anniversary,
Joe

Hello Bob
First of all Many Heartfelt Congratulations to your Goodself and Your Wife Jane on 41 years..(I shall make no corny jokes about you get less for murder which could work either way!!)
As for being in the city Bob I sympathise immensely as I grew up in a small village and had to live in a town for 12 years but have now been lucky enough to return to the country and be able to look over the fields in the morning at whatever happens along and not another row of houses.
As for the picture Bob its personal to you but has a great meaning to others by word of your note.
Paul

Hi Bob,

I had an arrow-head formation of Canade Geese flying 20 yerds above my head on Saturday; quite a sight although my camera was packed away at the time. Still, it was quite a thrill. Although Canada Geese are now very common in the UK, it is still athrill to watch them. This is a nice picture of the birds in their environment.

And happy anniversary to you and Jane in your own special environment.

Kind regards,

Mike

Hi Bob,

Love the picture and the notes. We can feel your yearning from your words and we can see the same emotion in these geese. A lovely scene - I like the framing of the tree.

Hi Bob,
Very nice shot of these geese. Some of them are flying over our area this time of the season. They are really beautiful. Thanks for the note too :-)
Thanks for the sharing,

Claude

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!!!!
WOW! 41 years...that's as long as I've been alive. *wink*
Awesome!!!!

Beautiful shot - very comforting. The lighting is gentle, the composition pleasing and the two geese bring to mind togetherness. Guess that's appropriate for 41 years, huh? :)

Hi Bob!

First of all I would like to give a big hug to your wife for her anniversary. You will do that for me, won't you?

Once again, after a first quick look at the picture I was more captured by your wonderful notes which are deep and instructive at the same time. Then I went back to the picture and looked at it with a total different focus. And I'm getting sad and furious at the same time when I imagine that people consider these wonderful animals as a pest! Some human beings are becoming poor idiots...

Thank you, Bob, to remember the importance of preserving nature and wildlife! And thank you to share with us your personal feelings...

Kind regards

Markus

You did a nice job using the tree to sort of frame this.

Happy Anniversary.

Bob, Very nice and lovely shot. I some how can feel the waiting feeling in the shot. Excellent Ganesh

Hi Bob,
Informative and heartfelt note. I guess some birds fly a few miles then say, "What the heck, this looks like a nice spot to Winter. Maybe we will migrate during the off-season when it's less crowed and prices go down." Nice photo capturing the solitude of the spot. Well done.

Bob,
What are these two doing there in the COLD season? But their offspring did come to Calgary. They "were" here.
You are right "we" humans ARE the 'pests'.
I too sometimes feel like" ... I feel like an inmate on death row...crossing off the days and counting." Will be 71 on 24th. instant.
Lovely photo.
Your pal from the COLD,
Mario.

Bonjour Bob, magnifique composition, j'aime beaucoup ces bernaches du Canada très bonne note aussi,
bravo mon cher Bob,
amitiés,
Pat

This is a beautiful photo, Bob, very well composed. We see quite a few Canadian Geese in the winter where I live, in California near the Delta of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. But I've never seen a frozen river!

Hello Bob,
I'm sorry for my disappearence, but my job kept me busy, and I must confess that when I'm tired, in the evening and I know that I must wake up very early in the morning, it's easy to tell myself "...tomorrow", but this evening I will resist and give a sign of life: your shot is, as ever, a gesture of love, both for your wife Jane (41...whow!!!) and wild nature. I am very impressed from your taste for every aspect of life in your land, and from respect for natives.
All my greetings, as photographer and as human being.
Have a nice day, my friend.
Violetta

This is a great shot.

Hello Bob,
Your always interesting notes..! Almost like my daily newspaper...
The accompanying photos aren't bad neither!
A pleasant capture of this two fellows in backlight, hopefully they can find their food with ice covered lakes and streams...
Greetings,
Pablo -
