[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Recently I posted some widlife in Yellowstone, so now it's time to move on to some geology landscapes. This is the Mammoth Hot Springs area in Yellowstone National Park. This is a view over the Hot Springs showing some of the trees that get overtaken by the constantly changing hot springs. A few years ago the trees were probaly growing in regular soil, but as the fault or fissure in the earth moved or the level of activity increased, so did the escape of the hot mineralized water, which encroached on the trees and preciptated into the travertine terraces that can be seen in the bottom of the photo. It all makes for a strange, stark, and a little moon-like look.

"Some of Yellowstone's hot springs take the form of quiet pools. Others are flowing. The waters of many of this latter type, such as those at Mammoth Hot Springs, become charged with carbon dioxide while underground, creating a mild carbonic acid. That acid dissolves underground limestone rocks and carries the mixture to the surface of the Earth. Once on the surface, the carbon dioxide gas escapes. Without carbon dioxide, the water is less able to carry the dissolved limestone. The dissolved limestone precipitates out, creating beautiful travertine terraces. In areas underlaid with volcanic rock, as opposed to more easily dissolved limestone, a modification of the plumbing system—perhaps through small earthquakes—can easily turn a hot spring into a geyser." Lucky you, to have such ominous weather when you visited Mammoth Hot Spings. I can still remember the extreem brightness I had to deal with when I was there. The white travertine just works as a major reflector.
I really like your composition, with the three oddly shaped trees as leadlines and subjects. The pools of steaming water help to create to this awesome moon-like landscape. it a small pitty that you chose this small aperture, since it cause some soft spots in the FG.
