Here in the Heart of the Valley of Wisconsin's Paper Valley, water levels are controlled by a series of locks and dams but allowed to run high on the Fox River on occasion, especially in the fall and the spring.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversees water-level management within the 6,400 sq. mi. Fox-Wolf Basin. It is, in the Corps' own words, "a highly regulated process that requires the Army Corps to accommodate a multitude of resource needs and user interests that include hydropower generation, pleasure boating, fishing, emergent plant restoration, and flood control."
The Corps, the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Thilmany Paper Co. (which operates about a mile from this scene) are currently collecting data to help determine optimal water flow and levels -- with one big consideration including maintaining habitat for ourlake sturgeon to continue to thrive.
I was shooting to try to capture not only the spectacular riverside color but also the froth and turbulence and beauty of that water when the river runs free. |

Sure looks like a picture I would have taken!!! Great shot. Great Scott! Almost as if in a painting. Wonderful colors. Moving waters. One of your better shots in last few posts.
