Well the birdies have found the food I have been throwing out on the back deck for 4 months now. Finally...... I wonder. Is birdies a "proper term"? :-)

This was my first shot of a dozen images taken for a trial run. Shot through the sliding doors at 1600ISO and hand held. Late afternoon on a cloudy, snowy day and on the shady side of the building. It's the only place I can do this.

So.... I am going to guess it is a fox sparrow until someone corrects me. I have learned a bit from TN and know he is fluffed to protect from the cold. He couldn't get to the food with is beak..otherwise he would catch a cold (aviary rhino virus)....no more smiley faces...just accept it I guess...I have coined a new veterinarian term. ...

I'm sure in days to come I will have had my fill of sparrows...perhaps others shall come too! We'll see..this notion of being patient is interesting. I sit in a chair and watch. Sort of like fishing...so here it is...drum roll inserted Mr Director. I am leaving for the Palouse drive now!!!

Hi Bob,
Delightful capture of this sparrow graciously accepting your hand out. Amazing how big they look when puffed up against the elements. Thanks Bob and Happy New Year.

Hello Bob,
You know by now that I'm desperately looking for light and colour at the moment and I found this pretty little Sparrow a bit dark so I did a workshop and found a wonderful little 'birdie'! He looks lovely and well-fed!
Keep watching them, their behaviour is interesting!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Bob,
Nice one of a Fox Sparrow, a very variable bird but this one is typical of the species. The contrast with the BG made the exposure difficult but I think Ulla has helped to bring out the colours, which made the ID easier for me, but whether the sparrow should be brightened up is I guess a matter of taste.
Anyway this may have been the same individual that you caught keeping away from the cold.
Well done and best wishes for 2008,
Ivan

Hi Bob. great to see a bird from you I am sure you are right with the name of Fox Sparrow. You have captured him with good detail and natural colours.well done that man..
TFS Nick..

A Happy New Year to you and The good lady wife.

Hi Bob,

Iy seems the sparrow is feeling the cold and resting before eating. The point of view is showing a lot of details and colors of the feathers. The photographer did capture well his subject.

Hi Bob,

Come on down - I have dozens of birds at my feeder all day long. Sometimes I think I'll go broke on bird seed. Even here oftentimes the birds are puffed up like this sparrow. Good shot for thru the window - I do that too.

Jane

Bonjour Bob,
très belle photo de cet oiseau, mais attention il va finir par devenir obèse, hihihi
Très bon focus et de jolis détails dans le plumage, magnifiques couleurs naturelles,

Hello Bob

I call them birdies and my software doesn't pick it up as a spelling error,SO IT MUST BE OK!.
A lovely POV for this shot. The plumage detail is very good with lovely colours and feather definition.
I love the tiny snowflakes. He certainly is surrounded by a smorgasboard of seeds.
