I think this is Cladonia coniocraea, not sure though. It's a common lichen locally, but this photo was taken near Irvine, Kentucky, USA. I thought that this clump was a particularly photogenic specimen.
Lichens are a fascinating combination of algae and/or cyanobacteria and fungus, living in a symbiotic relationship, the alga providing food for the fungus through photosynthesis, cyanobacteria also may provide nitrogen, while the fungus benefits the alga or cyanobacteria by retaining water and aiding in gathering mineral nutrients from the air and from the substrate that they are growing on.
There may be parasitism involved on the part of the fungus, as it requires its algal or cyanobacterial partner to survive, but the algae doesn't necessarily require the fungus for its survival. |
