I was walking along a stream near my home when I came upon this interesting cluster of Tiger Swallowtail butterflies.
The butterflies were feeding on the body of a deteriorating fish that had washed up on the shore. I'm not sure if it was some type of mineral from the decaying body that was attracting them or if it was the odor of it. It sure didn't look or smell to appetizing to me.
This photo was taken with my old film camera (Pentex K-1000 )Film speed (200 ASA )film (Fugi Color print) I was using a 55mm lens.
I scanned this photo in order to upload to this site. I tried to sharpen it but didn't have very good results. If anyone would like to try to improve on it for me I would appreciate it very much.

Hi Ron
There are some technical problems here poor sharpness and some noises. I like the composition. But the most important thing here is the moment. Very interesting observation especially for entomologists.
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Hello Ron,

An interesting image, kind of a mixed message, beauty and death combined. I know that some butterflies feed on animal dung too, so they do like some things that are, shall we say, a bit less appealing ( at least to our human senses) than their typical flower nectar.

Thanks,
John

Nice composition and beautiful colors!

I like butterfly photography a lot. Great capture of swallowtails in the wild. The only good closeups I get are at a butterfly pavillion. :) Well done!

Most interesting image Ron, I don't think I've ever seen swallowtails resting on a dead fish before..Would be great to know what they are actually attracted too.
Great image from scan,
Howard

Hello Ron

Great moment captured.
I like the way the swallowtails are clumped in the shot.
The focus and details are very good.
Excellent colours and markings are visible.
Even though they are grouped on a stinky dead fish, the shot is colourful, bright and interesting. The water has nice ripples with beautiful reflections, and it is easy to forget the dead fish completely.

Your work is wonderful!!! WOW! I hate it that I only get so many points each day.

This is a beautiful composition - great color, great layout, wonderful moment you captured!

Could it be salt from the fish body? Pretty butterflies....

Ron,
You got a beautiful shot of the butterflies here. I didn't notice the fish until I read your note. Hope it didn't smell too bad. wonderful colors and good detail and sharpness consider they were probably moving. Once again, Well done!
