[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a red-breasted sapsucker that was pointed out to us on an Audubon Society Owling expedition yesterday. We never saw any owls, but a few of us did get some snapshots of this little guy. I compared it to my book and a couple on-line guides and other shots of the bird here on TN, and I'm wondering why this sapsucker has such large dark eyes? I took this photo in low light with a fairly slow shutter speed for not using a tripod, so maybe the quality is just so bad that it looks like a large eye, but really isn't. Any thoughts??

--------------------
Overview:
Red-breasted Sapsucker: Medium-sized woodpecker with black-and-white barred upperparts, pale yellow belly, and white rump. The head, nape, throat, and breast are bright red; moustache stripe is white. The wings are checkered black-and-white with large white patches. Black bill, gray legs and feet.

Range and Habitat:
Breeds from southeastern Alaska and British Columbia south to coastal California. Spends winters in most of its breeding range except interior British Columbia. Preferred habitats include woodlands, forest edges, and groves of aspen and alder.

Hi Penny. A nice close up of the woodpecker. good colours and a nice POV. the detail is a little soft with some noise you could take this out with neat image. but still anice shot. well done TFS.

Great shot of the sapsucker! Nice POV and good coloring. There is some noise, but other than that it's good.

Hello Penny
I really dont know about the large eye..I shall download it and have a closer look...Its a great capture but as you say is a little out of focus...A tripod is not the easiest thing to carry about but I use a monopod...Its easy to carry and very usefull for lowlight situations..even sunny ones...It may be worth the investment for you..they are cheap as well.

Paul

Hello Penny. Nicely captured in beautiful pose of this sapsucker. I like the overall image composition even though rather hard for a small bird. Regards. Jusni
