This Red-shouldered Hawk is sitting at the top of a 50 foot pine tree on the lookout for prey at Sutro Heights in San Francisco.

The West Coast subspecies lives in forested areas from southwestern Oregon down through the Baja Peninsula of Mexico.

A medium sized hawk, it averages 1.5 lbs. and eats all manner of small mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. It prefers to hunt by ambush, waiting in the top of a tree for prey to enter its field of view. Less often it will hunt from the ground for burrowing animals, again waiting to pounce when they exit their burrow.

Wow! the composition of this picture is very nice! I like the position of the moon! The photo is a little... grainy? I can't put my finger on it, but with note and composition, i think it gets 2 points! Well done!

Beautiful picture of the hawk on the pine tree and the moon in the BG. Great composition, good exposure. TFS. : )

Hi Ian, I think compositionally this image is stunning. Maybe you could deal with the noisy background by using Neatimage. 50' away is a long way so you did really well to get this shot. TFS :)

Wonderful composition, stunning colors, great POV and good details. I really, really like the moon. Very good. The picture seems to be a little bit noisy but nothing serious. Well done! TFS.

Nice shot Ian. I like the composition with the moon. The BG is a bit noisy though.

I think it's a great shot. I'd like to have seen the moon just a little sharper, though not so sharp as to detract from the main focal point of the photo. Tell me, did you walk around to include the moon, or take the shot without thinking much about it? Either way, good to have included the background.
