Globe Mallow: Sphaeralcea ambigua A. Nelson
Often called a desert mallow, this is an example of a common Sonoran desert wildflower seen in spring. They are prominent in the desert in March and April. By far, the most common variety of Globe Mallow is orange colored. This one is unusual because it is pink.
I submit this first image of a globe mallow not because it is a particularly good example of the species, nor that it shows its place in the desert environment particularly well, nor even that it is how it is normally seen ... but because this picture is an unusual color for a Globe Mallow for this desert and depicts one of the most unusual desert wildflower seasons in the southwest of the USA in the last 50 years... the spring of 2005!
Why is this picture special?
This picture is special for several reasons. One, the mallow is pink. That color is not often seen in the Sonoran desert. In the great wildflower season of 2005 many different colored mallows were commonly seen. Two, though they are soft focused, you can see there are yellow and bluish lavender wildflowers in the background. These are NOT mallows. They are other wildflowers. What is important is this shows that in 2005 that many different types of wildflowers were found everywhere in the Sonoran desert.
2005 was one of the greatest wildflower seasons in the southwestern USA in decades.
That is what makes this picture special... To look at it, as is, you'd never know it was a picture of the desert. |
