These pests show up as soon as the temperature hits 90 degrees and depart as soon as we fall below 90 degrees. They invade the bird feeders chasing away all the little sparrows and finches. It's amusing to see three or four of them crowded on top of a feeder and seeing which one figures out how to get the food first. This one seemed not to be hungry - he was just posing for the camera.

White Winged Dove

The White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica) is a dove whose native range extends from the south-western USA through Mexico and the Caribbean. It has also been introduced to Florida.

Most populations of White-winged Doves are migratory, wintering in Mexico and Central America. The White-winged Dove inhabits scrub, woodlands, desert, and cultivated areas. It builds a flimsy stick nest in a tree and lays two cream-colored to white, unmarked eggs. Its flight is fast and direct, with the regular beats and occasional sharp flick of the wings that are characteristic of pigeons in general.

White-winged Doves are large, chunky pigeons at 29 cm. They are brownish-gray above and gray below, with a bold white wing patch that appears as a brilliant white crescent in flight and is also visible at rest. Adults have a patch of blue, featherless skin around each eye and a long, dark mark on the lower face. Their eyes, legs, and feet are red.

Both sexes are similar, but juveniles are grayer than adults. They have no blue eye ring and their legs and feet are brownish pink.

White-winged Doves feed on a variety of seeds, grains, and fruits. Western White-winged Doves (Zenaida asiatica mearnsii) migrate into the Sonoran Desert to breed during the hottest time of the year because they feed on pollen and nectar, and later on the fruits and seeds of the Saguaro cactus. This gregarious species can be an agricultural pest, descending on grain crops in large flocks. It is also a popular gamebird in areas of high population.

Beutiful colors and exellent sharpness.

You nailed it Jane, the technicals look good to me.
Now I must disagree that this bird is a pest. One mans pest is another mans blessing. They make such a cool sound you know ;-)
Competition for food is just par for the course in the animal kingdom of course..
Well done & Thank You,
Howard

Hi Prima.
We also have a lot of this Doves here. One of them comes every day to My home, and sing posted in the tree waiting for food.
Lovly image of this white winged dove.
Saludos
Luis52.

Hello Jane great looking big eye looking at the cam details look fine. I'm sure it has the biggest eye i've seen for a dove. Nicely composed and fine light. Would be nice if it sat on this side of the feeder roof. They can sure out eat any of the other birds apart from the starlings which come in numbers in my garden. Hope you're feeling better. Hi . Have just got home so can only mark this good picture for now.

Nick..

Hello Jane
Is this really a pest?..it has wings and has to eat..They seem very similar to the woodpigeon that slightly plagues me..But nature has made them resiliant..And they cost us more in bird food!!..lovely sharp details and colours on what are so hard to capture colours.
Paul

Hi my beloved friend Jane,
Superb shot-as always. TFS.
Here (Cyprus) is very hot! (32oC) and spring passed! Global warming affected here. Greetings,
Bayram

Hello Jane
It is very beautiful Columbidae species. It is similar somewhat to Turtle Dove here. but they are different genera. You captured it with a nice shot. Sharp details, POV and composition nice. your notes also nice. Thanks for sharing, best wishes
Ahmet

Excellent image and very good technical quality. I personally like hearing this dove coo as summer approaches, but once it arrives they disappear because it gets to darned hot.

Funny that you equate the first sign of summer as a springtime temperature of 90. :) Most of the rest of the USA equates that with summer. LOL!!!

Southern Arizonans, of course, equate the arrival of summer as temperatures approaching 105 degrees.

Hello Jane,
Oh! such a awesome sharpness in this shot, just amazing and well done for it!
very nice colour and details especially on the plummage!
many thanks for sharing

Hello Jane,
You made a fine capture of the head of this White-winged Dove with fine sharpness, and well shown against the OOF natural BG. But the rest of the bird is dominated by what looks like a lantern and that's a pity IMHO.
The head, especially the eye, is great though.
Thanks for sharing this,

Hi Jane,
Wonderful shot of this White Winged Dove sitting elegantly on the bird feeder. Lovely colours and details on its plumage and that red eye looks gorgeous. Superb handling of harsh natural light and perfectly exposed. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello Jane,
The Dove looks like a villain with its blood shot eyes.:)
It's always like that with big birds. They always drive away the small ones when it comes to food. This is an excellent picture of the dove with superb sharpness and details. Nice Blurred background.
TFS,
Smitha.

Pests they are, Jane!:)
I do hope you're doing better these days...
Nice to see you're back!
Cheers!

Hi Jane

When I read your notes about this being a pest I was wondering how the critiquers might respond to that. I thought that the one mans pest is the other ones delight. So, I continued reading some of the critiques and obviously I wasn't disappointed. There are those who agree and those who disagree. Of course all doves / pigeons have such wonderful sounds that I cannot imagine myself how nature would sound without them. However, I understand why you call them pests and I do not hold that against you. It is quite normal that something which might be too abundant or overwhelming in numbers in one area and rare or seldom seen in another area might be seen in a rather different light.

Anyway, you captured this bird with excellent details (especially that nice big eye) and very natural colours. I like the yellow sheen on the neck feathers and the clear and well contrasted white feathers of the wings.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
