Mexican Poppy: Eschscholtzia mexicana

Photographed looking north toward downtown Phoenix, Arizona USA from South Mountain Park during the incredible spring of 2005.

That wildflower season was one of the greatest in recent decades for the southwest of the USA. The desert did not look like a desert at all. Instead there was a carpet of green grasses and wildflowers like these Mexican Poppies that completely covered the desert floor.

Note:
South Mountain Park is the largest city park in the world. It is largely undeveloped which makes it even more unique. It also has a forest of radio and television antennae up on top of its highest point that can be spotted from 70 miles(110 km) away. They are the first thing you see when driving or flying to Phoenix.

I love these flowers Steve. We grow them here and I've seen quite a few different coloured varieties now. Soome are even a pink tone - they'll be cultivated ones I imagine.
Well composed image with the city in the BG
Good one

Hi Steve,

I love the effect of the larger than life poppies with the city in the background. I've never seen this view of Phoenix - actually I never go there - just pass through. The vivid oranges and yellows of the flowers are beautiful.

SC,
Love the way you composed this shot with the flowers overseeing the city of Phoenix, and it's beautiful mountain background.
I've hiked on a few of them in the past and they have a beauty all of their own. Nicely done!!

Hallo SC
When I saw the thumbnail of this photo on the gallery I thought at first that it was snow in the background. Upon opening the image to a larger size I was a little disappointed as in my mind I already saw these snow covered mountains in the far distance. I was also surprised to see these colourful and most beautiful flowers blooming in such splendour with the buildings far in the background. This image gave a whole new look to the term big city. I really fancy this image, as it has a most a delightful and sunny view to it. The flowers are vivid and lively and create a feeling of spring in the air. I like the way you presented this image, with the flowers very close to the eye which makes the details and prettiness of the flowers more closely to observe and appreciate. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Davidson,
Wonderful shot of these Mexican Poppies with such bright colours and sharpness. Superb light and exposure control and I like the colour contrasts of the blue/yellow/orange/green. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. kudos.
