I was watching my two grandchildren this evening when I heard an old familiar sound, sure enough sitting in one of our trees out back was a male Eastern Bluebird. I grabbed my camera and tried to sneak up for a closer shot, all the while quietly trying to convince my grandson (Travis) not to follow me.
Trying to tell a three year old not to follow grandpa as he is sneaking up on a bird, with his eye glued to the viewfinder of a camera doesn't work very well. This is as close as I could get, and I had to crop quite a bit to even get this shot.
We have had a pair of bluebirds nest in our backyard just about every year fot the last ten years or so. They usually raise three to five young about twice throughout the summer months.
The males are the first to arrive, and they seem to choose the nesting box site. He spends a lot of time just calling while sitting in the trees out back near the box. Once you hear his distinct sounds you never forget it.
After a day or so the female usually shows up, and together they build a nest out of pine needles. The only problems they seem to encounter is that they nearly always have to compete with some local sparrows for the rights of the nesting box.
The males have a very bright blue plumage on their backs and wings compared to the females. This frontal shot doesn't show just how beautiful the males really are. I hope to post a different pose sometime this summer which will highlight their bright blue colors.

Hi Ron,

Believe it or not, I have never seen this Bluebird before. He is beautiful and you do him justice in this shot. Colors are wonderful, details are superb and the pose is marvelous. How lucky you are to have bluebird families in your backyard each year.

Jane

Ron,

Even though you had to crop this image to bring this blue bird 'to the front', it doesn't take anything away from the quality of this image. The sharpness, contrast, colors and POV are all very good. You've captured this blue bird wonderfully.
I am sure it's a blast having those guys nest in your own back yard. If they do end up nesting there again, make sure you keep your camera handy and provide us with regular updates!

Best Regards,

Martin

Hello Ron,
Wonderful photo of this Bluebird. Very sharp with good details. Beautiful natural colours.
The bird is a very central in the photo; I should have cropped a piece of the left side.
Excellent OOF BG, DOF and POV.

Hi Ron,

Really nice shot, it's tough to get close enough to a bird that small for a good shot with a 300mm lens, so I say well done, especially with your helper in tow. That's really sharp and detailed, obviously you don't need a Nikon, your Canon works great!

Bluebirds are uncommon here, so it's always a treat for me when I see one.

Thanks,
John

Hi Ron,
this splendid shot is really exciting. The sharpness and the hazy and blury background really enhances the beauty.
The crossing of the branch is very graphical. Beautifully composed and well presented shot of a bird in its natural stance.

Foozi
