Taken just yesterday in Jane's first real trip out shooting with me in a couple of weeks, we were greeted by the greening of the Palouse. And believe it or not, in very small small pockets of Palouse hills which do not see sun, there was still some snow left even though the temperatures were near 70F. To give a perspective of the grand and wide Palouse, the trees on the hill at right of picture are 70 foot high pines. In other words this is one very large area and goes on for hundreds of square miles.

As has been mentioned before, this land was wide open grasslands and prairie until the very late 1800's when the "iron horse" train brought people from both Seattle, Portland and points east. They are among the most fertile lands in the west. Farmers have spread feed seed and blended it among the rare prairie grasses which are slowly disappearing, yet make up large pockets of the vistas. Governments rule that if a farmer grows feed,he must care for the grasslands as well as his farm. this make is practically impossible to tell which is feed and which is rare prairie grass from images, until later in summer when the feed is cut leaving a patchwork quilt of the landscape. Only then do the large remaining areas of prairie grasses remain.

The Nikon seems so much more adapted to greens and blues. Back int he days of Kodak vs Fuji in film, the Kodak film won hands down for covering the full range of colours well. Fuji, especially in slide work, tended towards the greens and blues. One learned quickly to tell the difference in films by the end result. I find it rather strange that in the digital world, the same holds true for a camera by Fuji, based on Nikon s body and taking Nikon lens, as compared to the Canon which tends more to a full spectrum,. Word on the "street" has it that the new Nikon D3 is very much more like the Canon than all previous cameras. Since I shall never be able to afford the 6000 dollars, let alone the better lens which would be demanded by such a high price, I will leave this all to be sorted out by others. Until then, here I present this Palouse in spring. Camera by Nikon DSLR and lens by Nikkor.

Hi, my fellow Nikon using friend,

How lovely that spring has arrived, even if very late! The same is true for this country. Everything is late and now that there has been a few days of sun, everything is rapidly trying to catch up!

The perspective is very difficult to handle with this, Bob! I'm glad you gave us the dimensions of the trees! Vast and beautiful! Such a contrast to the wooded areas you often post! I would not have realised that the white was snow if you had not informed us!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Morning BoB!!! nice view you have there, this is almost like a Grant Wood painting, the heartland of America,,,,great POV and composition,
You have an exceptional eye to stir the emotive in man!! fine work Bob...

Hello Sir!
It's wonderful to see that the green colour has arrived to the Palouse at last even though some little remainders of snow are still seen! It is a bleak but beautiful landscape and interesting to see images from different times of the year. Lovely colours too.
Many thanks and kind regards, Ulla

Hi Bob.

A beautiful scene and I'm so glad Jane was able to share it with you. This gives such a feeling of vastness and compared to cities, nothingness. Wonderful colors, beautiful sky and a lovely composition.

Jane

Hello Bob,
You see very well this is a step in the progress...
Beautiful "small" hills. Amazing vista...
Kodak versus Fuji...that's a while ago; the good old times;-)
Wish you all the best and thanks for sharing your work!
Annick

Hello Bob,
Much appreciated for the sharing in the changing season scenery of Palouse, last we saw the place was covering with snow and now covered with growing green, everything seems alive soon!
the exposure and focus is handled very well here
thank you once again
Tony

Bob

This one almost gives me motion sickness, there are many rolling hills around our way akin to this altough most are covered in Rape Seed at the moment. They are glorious in clour as is your subtle work, I will go out to shoot to show you.

Hello Bob
How beautiful to see the Spring shooting in these vast and neverending hills and prairies! The name Palouse sounds interesting as interesting would be to see this land in late summer with the patches trimmed. I like the sight and the beautiful sky that you captured.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Best regards
Maite

Hi Bob. Glad th hear Jane could get out of the house with you. When i looked at the picture i wondered if that was stil sme snow on the hills. But what a difference a ffew weeks can make. all green again. You have captured a good landscape with fine detail and colours. well done TFs.
Nick..

Bellissimo paesaggio, simile ad alcune colline senesi (Toscana), ottimo taglio compositivo, splendidi i colori e molto bello il cielo che il movimento delle nuvole. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Bob!
What a fantastic shot!
The mottled browns and greens are lovely!
Very good composition as always.
Great lighting too.
The sharpness is incredible!
Very, very well done!

Joe

Nice colors and your composition nicely conveys the feeling of open prairie in eastern Washington.

Early May is pushing being "late spring", but in any regard it looks like things are starting to green up nicely in your neck of the woods.

Note:
Either you entered the date taken in error or the date in your camera is off by a month. :)

A nice capture of this spring scenery of Palouse. Lovely patterns in the green. Excellent composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Bob

you talk about not being able to afford the new Nikon... have you seen the price of the new 800mm canon lens... +£10,000. Makes the £1,000 i have just spent on the 100-400mm IS canon lens seem reasonable!

Nice shot by the way with great spring colours, splash of snow, trees and the folds in the land.

Hey Bob,
Tell you what?I dont think you should bother about those dollars to be spend on a lens.Your shots have such great depth and the notes tell such wonderful stories that you anyone who comes around and gets to know you feels compelled to come and check on your gallery.
This another one to your collection, so beautifully captured, i love the PoV you have used. Are those white patches snow up there?Wow, what a combination of sun, gren grass, the rolling hills and then the snow.vERY WELL DONE.

Hi Bob,
Wow.......this place is turning into such a wonderful green. Looks so majestic with brown and green and the sky makes it look even better. The thin lines of snow looks distinct and the 'undulating' surface creates a magical visual. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

I've missed so many of your shots, I'm trying to catch and may never do it. I'll just try to dedicate a few minutes every morning to scanning the gallery. :)

Again, a wonderfully composed landscape with sexy curves! :)

Yes. It is called a landscape. Wonderful.
