For the last year I have seen California Quail on a regular basis but they are so doggone fast at getting way...and their behavior is somewhat erratic. For the most part they do not go up into the trees, but in this case it was in an attempt to hide from me. Two of a dozen went up this Norway Pine about 15 feet over my head. Now mind you...ever since I broke my back in 2004, I have both a balance problem and a real hard time pulling a heavy lens and looking up at the same time. So this image was pretty much a modern miracle. Because I was shooting at 1600 ISO...I was able to get some fairly good contrast under the heavy canopy of the tree.

California Quail are all over the west, but I have not seen them up any further north than this. Once we get another 30-40 miles north they are pretty much gone and replaced by the grouse and in more numbers. As per the Norway Pine, it is sometimes confused with Red Pine. Red Pine is mostly back east, although I suspect it is imported out west for decorative purpose. Norway Pine is about the same but is not really a Norwegian product. Not sure about how it came to be called thusly but if you happen to be Norwegian, then maybe you know...or maybe not. The bark of the tree has an orangish red colour to it, which really must have thrown the sensor into a loop, but the end results were very much better than trying to film a quail on the ground or in the snow, both of which I have done with little success.

Hi Bob,
Wonderful shot of this great looking Quail with lovely colours and details on its plumage. You have got head-long into bird photography and doing skillful work for sure. Nice elegant pose captured on that interesting tree trunk. I like the natural surrounding and the pleasant lighting. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello Bob,
A fine capture of a beautiful quail.Well, the only quails I am familiar with are those I rear at home and they are not at all beautiful like this one. Plus they lack the head crest. I am happy that you manage d to get this lovely shot in spite of your poor health because this is a new species for me and you haver captured it with an excellent POV, sharpness and details in the plumage. The feathers arranged on the underparts reminds me of the scales on a fish.
i never realised that this camera will give such good and clear picture at a higher ISO like 1600.
Anyway thanks for sharing this beautiful picture,
Regards,
Smitha.

Nice capture! Good color, quality and presentation.

Let me see now... a bird in hand is worth two in the bush, sooo... A quail in the pine saves time?... Nawwww, that isn't it... A bird on wood does what it should?... That doesn't sound familiar either... Uhhh... A bird in the tree lives it's life free!... Ok, good enough! ;) ;)

Hi Bob,
Beautiful capture.I liked POV,crisp celar eyes, details, colors and composition very much.
Thanks for posting.

Hi Bob,

Wow - you are good at photographing birds! See what happens when you look up. This must be our Gambels Quail cousin - they looks so much alike. I love seeing them on trees but your trees are so much prettier. Wonderful details of her face, plummage, and the feather on top of her head. Natural colors and a beautiful setting.

Jane

Hi Bob,
Great looking bird, love the coloration & markings it has..and that feather in his cap is great too :)
Nice detail/DOF and exposed well, an interesting comp/POV.
Too bad those darn branches are between you & the bird, but they don't bother much..
Well done & TFS!

Hi Bob

I love quails and this is a lovely view of one. I have never seen a quail up a tree - I tend to think of them as birds that run around on the ground. Wonderful details, nice light and well composed

Very sharp and very detailed capture of this Quail!
Wow this is a beautiful bird! Look at all the different colours and patterns on its plumage!
Very natural-looking shot with a great POV and decent composition.
Noise-reduction may have been over-done on the surroundings but atleast it makes the Quail stand out even more :-)

A very fine image, Bob!

Cheers!

Joe

Hi Bob,
Beautiful plumage markings and details in this very pleasing composition. The color, especially the pine is wonderful. My friend maybe when shooting above your head you should lay down. Thanks for sharing this wonderful image Bob.

Hi Bob,

Excellent shot of Quail in 'Norway pine'. I have seen the Norwegian ones as well but first time I hear that name. It looks to me like the pine that grows all around Northern Europe, which is the same as in Norway, for marketing people it might sound more exotic if its Norwegian;o) - it could as well be called the Finnish Pine. The small ones growing on mountains and tundra (Lapland) might be of different species. The Quail has good pose, is sharp and has eye contact.

Bob,
What a beautiful bird you have captured. I have always loved quail and their familiar Bob White call. When I was a kid we had them all around our neighborhood, but they have vanished due to numerous reasons.
I know this bird probably has a call quite different, but it still has the general features of the Bob White to me.
Great image Bob!

I've only seen quails birds on the ground, scuttering along quickly in rows.
Good catch Bob, you managed to get it in between the twigs on the tree.
Attractive patterned plumage - nice and clear to see too,
Janice

Hello Bob

Great capture...
the tree cuts a nice diagonal line through the frame.
I like how this beautiful quail is positioned on the tree.
Nicely composed with good focus and details.
The colours are lovely.
Nicely done.

Hi Bob,

This is really a wonderful frame. The perching bird [seems similar to a partridge here] with a nice plummage.

Hello Bob,
I can't recall having seen a Quail up in a Pine tree before - usually you see them captured on the ground! THis is a very fine capture in great details and lovely colours. A nice contrasting background too.
TFS and kind regards, Ulla

I can't seem to photograph one of these - they flurry and scatter like...well, quail, what else! ha ha
Wonderfully composed and great detail!

Hi Bob,

The quail on the big branch is impressive. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the bird. The photo is clear and precise. There is a good contrast between the colors. The subject is nicely frame by the branches. Have a nice day.
