I took this photo at Mountain Lake in the Presidio of San Francisco.
Canada Goose (Branta canadensis), has a black head and neck with a broad whit chin band. Its back is brown and under surface gray. The tail is black with a white area underneath. Voice: A deep 2-part ka-honk. Nest: On the ground (some on hay piles), of grass and twigs lined with down. Eggs are 4-10, dull white, 3 3/8” x 2 ¼”.
Distribution in California: They fly to the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Range north of June Lake in the spring and depart late summer or early autumn to the Great Valley for winter.Wild geese are wary at all seasons, whether floating on water or standing or foraging on shore. This “honker” formerly nested commonly on many east side lakes from Tahoe northward, and some may still do so. The young gray goslings swim under care of the parents until able to fly. By the end of summer adults and immatures band together and fly in V-shaped flocks. In winter, geese of this and other species live on grasslands and grain fields of the Sacramento Valley. |

I am very familiar having lived 20 plus years in Mendocino and 4 years in Woodland, which was much closer to teh bird sanctuaries...and of course my many visits to Tahoe...Very nice clear and sharp presentation Gary. Your name sounds familiar...ah...but a common name....I am in Washington now for many years...and see these quite often...still an enjoyable aviary yes?
