Mayfly (Hexagenia limbata).

I shot this Mayfly yesterday morning around 9:00am. I was trying a closeup of the Gerbera Daisy when I spotted it on another flower. The blue you see in the background is a tarp off to the side of the beds.

You can see a macro of the beautiful Gerbera Daisy in the WORKSHOP.

The largest of all North American mayflies, the species is common from coast to coast on slow moving rivers and on many stillwaters. Some hatches are so thick it takes a snow plow to clear the bridges the following day. This one is missing its two tails and and has unmarked wings compared to others such as Ephemera varia..

I used two stacked ext rings on this one at a total of 48mm.

Thanx for lookin'

Hi Howard,
It is good to see you again. As I was not here for quite a long time say about 15 days or so. Well I think this is some sort of adult mayfly. Hope somebody can exactly identify this. Excellent composition and sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Howard,
Yes, this is a species of mayfly shown with perfect sharpness against a colourful BG, the OOF tarp being very effective in showing it off. I like the pose with the front pair of legs held up.
As all mayflies have three long 'tails' I wonder if this one had his nipped off by a bird trying to catch his breakfast.
TFS the great macro, mf
Ivan

Hi Howard!

The colours and the contrast in this picture are marvellous. All is so vivid, and - moreover - so crystal clear. It's a refreshing picture... like many taken in the morning!

Kind regards

Markus

The red and the blue encasing the Fly are the heart and soul of this fantastic image, Howard.
As for the Fly, the mind boggles at the sight of those really out of this world wing patterns.
Hats off to your skills as a professional nature photographer, my friend.
Warm regards.
Ram

Great Howard...Gee....that red looks about as natural as it more than likely does when seen in person...and hence it gives the shot a film quality. Nicely contrasted and portrayed as if in a position of prayer...who knows..nature is like that eh?

Hello Howard,
It's funny how often this happens! You try to focus on one thing and then something else pops up out of nowhere!! Anyway, this is a very fine capture of this Mayfly and I like the Gerbera in the workshop too. Both excellent technically and I love the colours.
TFS and kind regards, Ulla

Hello Howard,
this is a really brilliant, sharp and colouful picture showing the mayfly in all its details.
The specimen probably belongs to hte genus Hexagenia (family: Ephemeridae). I suggest Hexagenia limbata.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Howard,

A double treat for me - I've never seen a red daisy nor a mayfly before. The closeup of the flower is gorgeous. The Mayfly is wonderful - the wings are sensational with razor sharp details. Is he biting his leg? I love the look on his face and the fantastic eye. I'm watching Tiger and Rocco and am rooting for the underdog. 9:00 is pretty early for me to turn on the TV.

Howard,
This is an absolutely stunning photo, perfect in every way. You can't get any better!!
Are their wings always extended like this, or did you have to wait for just the right moment to click the shutter?
I've seen on the news where they have to use street sweepers to clean them up sometimes in the Cleveland area.
Thanks for sharing a beautiful image.

Hellow Howard, stunning colours, beautiful light and what a strange butterfly! And red is red in this picture and in the workshop, incredible! I think red is the hardest colour to render in a picture, like the poppy red, and you managed it perfectly with your skilled eyes. I think this butterfly is the same we had in the bedroom last night, they are almost citrus yellow and the long stick coming out the mouth is peculiar! Thanks for this beautiful composition,

Francine

Hi Howard

Another absolute beauty from you, my friend!
I'm simply speechless to the amount of wonderful colors you can get out of these macros! Really terrific!
The contrast here between the mayfly and the petals is superb and if you add to that the excellent BG...it's really amazing!
The side flash had a very interesting effect here - leaving that leg shadow on its body - but it sure exposed it spot-on. I like the idea overall.
The details are also awesome - super clear and sharp - and the DOF is exceptional, keeping the entire subject in perfect focus. It's a bit of a shame something happened to it's tail (the 3 appendages are torn here), but other than that, it's a gorgeous presentation for the species.

Bravo and TFS
