[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I've called her "Snappy", because she's hovering near a snapdragon flower in our garden. Shot today with mid-day light, bright & sunny.

The more western cousin of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the Black-chinned Hummingbird is associated with deciduous and evergreen oak woodlands, riparian forests, chaparral, desert washes, canyon bottoms and our gardens. They are generally duller colored than the Ruby-throated Hummingbird with a shorter tail and longer bill. Their tail is generally more active in hovering.

Identifying Features (Male):
More distinct black chin over purple gorget
Looks black headed
Short, slightly forked tail
Long, slightly curved, light bill
Tail tends to end at or very near wing tips

Identifying Features (Adult Female):
Long, slightly curved, light bill
Grayer crown above less contrasting head than Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Tail tends to end at or very near wing tips
Grayer overall color.

Hi Howard,

Hooray - you got your Hummingbird. Snappy and the Snapdragon are both beautiful. You froze her perfectly as she hovered over the pretty flower. Superb details, wonderful colors, fantastic background. I love the position she is in with the raised tail. You have given me something to strive for.

Wow Howard,

What a stunner just superb detail, the colours are amazing, and even with a speed of 1/2500 and a fill flash the wings are nicely blurred, just goes to show how fast there little wings must be moving, an absolute stunner,

Cheers Rick :)

Hi Howard,
I love this girl. : )
Such a cute pose with her little bottom up. : )
Reminds me of one of those little cherubs in those Italian paintings,
except it is a bird version.
The bright colors of the flower really anchor the image.
Beautiful BG too.
TFS. : )

Hi Howard,
one of your top-class shots, so difficult to do in the yard and without the benefit of a feeder. Just a wonderful sight , this hovering bird.
Best regards
Dietrich

Hi Howard,
Today I was strolling over our terrace. I came across to a tiny bird just like this hummer but the beak was very small. On first I was happy WOW who told there is no humming birds in India. Then suddenly I realised it as an other bird which I have captured in the past. So again I thought of capturing some more shots of it. So I rushed into my room prepared my camera and came back to do some action and lo the model was gone. Lovely composition here with sharp details and excellent timing. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Howard,
Very good, an unusual angle for the Hummer to be at, they always seem to be pictured more upright. Great detail and love the simple composition with just two elements against a clean and neutral background.
Cheers,
Adrian

It's a beautiful composition with excellent stopped action Howard. I like the simplicity seen here with a single flower and the Hummingbird, with both in excellent sharp detail. Capture and placement of the bird with relation to the flower, and in the crop is excellent.

Thanks, John

Hi Howard again,
Another beautiful shot of Your 'hummings and flowers' series. And a very good one again. The carpet-alike "empty" bg adds more to the image, great lights, timing and compo.
I bookmark You as one of my favorite photographers - I hope You don't mind. :) Congrats and tfs this superb shot.
Friendly regards, László

Dear Howard,
must be a most pleasant relaxing from business as usual to follow humming birds hovering over flowers in your own garden. I really envy you for such a location. Stunning precision achieved by perfectly handled advanced equipment, and a truly artistic, aesthetically very pleasing, highly concentrated result.
Thank you! My best regards,
Peter

Ciao Howard,
splendida cattura con una tecnica perfetta, mi piace molto tutta questa serie in cui entra nella composizione anche il fiore che con i suoi colori ravviva ulteriormente queste meravigliose immagini di colibrě in volo, anche OOF BG č stupendo.
