If the Palouse is known for anything, it is known for the dozens of wild grasses. Some of them are very rare. Since I live on the edge of this vast Palouse land, I am in a round about way a recluse as well on it now having moved from the wilderness. I say this knowing that the Palouse in a way, could also be called a wilderness. However my wilderness consists of high mountains, primitive roads and millions of trees. This wilderness is quite different.

The Palouse Prairie were formed during the ice ages , mostly consisting of silt dunes. The Palouse hills consist of more or less random humps and hollows. The steepest slopes, which may reach 50% slope, face the northeast. The highly productive loess ranges from 5 to 130 cm deep.Large areas of level land are rare. And under these silt "dunes" are rocks which are millions of years old and come up and out in some areas closer to Cheney Washington where I do most of my recent picture taking.

There are near my university town, many folks who research various fields such as geology, climatology, geography and such, but folks who study the plant life are hard to find. Yes they do exist but considering the large area of the Palouse, they are hard to locate:-) They would be the only ones who know of all the names of grasses. suffice it to say that these wild grasses imaged today are one of perhaps 27 of the rare varieties..they do indeed, from one to another, all look rather similar at certain times. There are subtle differences however to which the trained eye can put a name. I am not one of those people, nor do I know one....so here I present the close in shot of the Wild Grasses of the Palouse.

Beautiful shot showing two species of Palouse grasses with their seed heads ripening.
Technically faultless: composition and lighting top class. A joy to look at and thanks for sharing this one Bob.
Ivan

Hello Bob,

This looks a choir of grasses with their faces uplifted to the sky. One or two are bent-headed, drawing breath, but most present an uplifting picture!

Interesting notes.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your warm feedback on 'Spotlighting 4 leaf clover'. I love your reminiscences of mountain life!

Hai Bob,
beautiful image and your comments are valuable too. if they are still around there please try couple frames with patterns with little more contrast. you can avoid those dark patches on top right corner, if possible. TFS.

Hi Bob,

I wasn't sure what I would see when I clicked the thumbnail. I found a big surprise. If I were driving by this field I would think it was wheat. I love the colors and the sunlight shining on the grass. The natural colors are wonderful. Quite a contrast to the scenery here.

Hello Bob,
Your lighting here looks strong and you managed it well. Your grasses are turning gold, with all our rain we are still green and growing. Thanks for sharing Bob.

Rob

Hi Bob,
NIce artistic composition with lighting effect, very well done
TFS and Regards
Jean-Michel

Very informative note that goes very well with this image of wild grasses in your part of the world, Bob.
I see this image essentially as an abstract creation through your critical yet esthetically rich perception of things.
It is a lovely composition.
Hope you are keeping well.
Regards,
Ram

Namastay Bob,
A lovely capture of this beautiful dried grass. Very well composed with excellent lighting and details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
HP

Beautiful picture... actually reminds me of late summer. Grasses blowing in the wind will always make for great photo studies.

Hi Bob

I wanted to comment on this one for some time now but got away from the city for a few days in a place with no internet and phone reception...i'm sure you of all people understand me :)
Anyway, i find myself sometimes staring at things just like this and wanting to capture them with my images...sometimes i can, other not.
This is a stunning shot and a splendid composition, with this wild "game" of light and mosaic of shapes.
Wonderful work with the exposure here, in my humble opinion, and excellent use of the rather shallow DOF.

BRAVO and TFS
Horia
