Or as most Americans call them, WASP. Odd enough that in acronym form this can also mean White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. for a great many, including me, it is good to know they have a potent and venomous stinger. You will be glad to know one that Wasps are not known to carry human diseases, BUT allergic reactions to their sting can be fatal and I have covered stories when working in print media, of children who have died of wasp stings and adults who have come very close. The venom can in a small percentage, cause Anaphylactic shock. It ain't pretty.

The wasp at most times will stay away from you, if you stay away from them. However having been stung numerous times in the wilderness, I can tell you from my own experience that in the late part of summer when weather is the hottest and driest, they know instinctively that their end is coming near...and so in search of water or food or for some such reason unknown, they go mad and sting anything in site. With me, I carry a small bulbous venom extractor. If it is not available I suck out the venom and spit it right tout, then cleansing my mouth. At that time my countdown begins. the sooner I can get to a shot of epinephrine, the better. I have survived without the shot however. If I can get most venom out and take 50 milligrams of Benadryl immediately, followed by same in 4 hours and on for the first 2 days....it will usually swell only an appendage.... and twice it stung my forearm and the swelling was twice the size of my arm all the way to apprx 3 inches below my shoulder. It was hot, flushed and itching. but it finally stopped. Frankly, when one lives in the middle of nowhere, this can be a very scary thing:-)

Hi Bob. As you say in your notes they leave you alone most of the time but late summer when the workers have finished building the nest is when the do most of the stinging and yes it can hurt. You have captured a good close up with good detail and rich colours. well done TFS.

Hi Bob,

This Wasp has chosen a very colorful flower to pose on. Very nice with excellent details. Not that I like Wasps. It reminds me of the time they had built a nest under my bicycle seat. Need I say more?

Hi Bob, splendid macro with fantastic colors, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Bob

A lovely shot of this wasp - very good detail and colours from a great POV.

I am allergic to Coca-Cola - I ignored it until I had a very close shave reaction (my neighbour - a nurse had warned me, but I 'knew better'). Fortunately my wife (who is violently allergic to penecillin) had an epipen with her, so I was OK. Needless to say - I have not touched it since!

James

That's a serious looking wasp... amazing colours to this, the wasp has great details and a fine profile, the flowers are pretty good as well!!

Splendida macro, molto bella la composizione con la messa a fuoco selettiva, buona nitidezza, magnifici i colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Bob

Those brilliant colours caught my eye right off the bat Bob,
Very sharp image and composed nicely. Your wasp can be very deadly indeed. In the past twenty or so years we've had a number of deaths in this area caused by bee stings.
My daughter Lori has an allergic reaction to bee stings and swells up very quickly if stung.
Ron

I hear you, Bob. I, too, suffer from that affliction, and as if that isn't bad enough, last year I discovered my allergies to bees are even worse. Isn't it odd how some people are usually allergic to one or the other, and then there's the few that are severely allergic to both? I've often thought that somewhere in my family genetics there's a Murphy, especially since I'm so familar with that law!

I like the colors here; they remind me of the some the paintings I've seen in galleries - and it's always the brightest that capture my attention first, followed by the more subdued ones.

Excellent notes as usual. :)

Wowwww Bob, what a splendid macro shot !!!!
Lighting and pallet of colours are just wonderfull
perfect focus show us impressive detail on the bee and on the flower
a great cheer my friend, I love it

hello Bob

wonderful image with the multi-colours, fine POV, DOF and framing,
i love the fact that (or the effect) the foreground and background
flowers are off-focus and you focused only the middle one with the bee,
beautiful luminosity of the image, with excellent sharpness and details,

I've missed a whole lot of your posts, Bob, but I'll start with your latest.
It's a fine capture of a species of wasp that I haven't seen before. The sharpness is spot on and it looks good on these daisy type flowers. Wasps usually attack when provoked but I wonder if people grouped under the acronym do :))
Nice to see and read your work again,
Ivan

Namastay Bob,
A nice capture of this beautiful wasp. Very well composed with sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Bob,
Interesting wasp you're presenting us today and on a beauiful 'eternal' flower! Fine sharp capture and in good light and colours.
I understand your fear of these insects especially as you lived in the wilderness. I've been stung by a Bee once and that was not very pleasant!

Hi Bob,
great note!
Wasps can be very agressive little buggers... my little brother reacts to stings (though not seriously), once he was stung right in the middle of his face and within hours his whole face had swollen to, quite frankly, hideous proportions :-) Now you can imagine how much fun I had taking the mickey of him! (I was a lot younger back then so didn't know any better!) :-D

This is a wonderfully coloured photo.
I love the composition and low-down POV.
Excellent BG-blurring DOF.

Well done, Bob!

Joe

Hello Bob,

I have a friend who has a special 'pencil' (for want of a better word) in case he is stung. One of the children in my class also has one (on top of my cupboard) just in case!!

Back to the photograph - I really like how you have focussed on the middle flower so our eyes travel into the photograph and back out again! (Does that make sense?)
Of course, three is the perfect number for composition. Oh, and there is a wasp there too!
You can tell I'm a flower person!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo Bob
This might be a wasp, but a very good looking and well presented one. The detail as well as the focus is really clear. The texture on the body is sharp and obvious. The pink spotted flower is such a warm and sunny colour, and one cannot help to feel joyful looking at this vivid and most friendly image. Very good presentation. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Bob

thanks for the recent critique etc. I have indeed been around TN for a while. I do enjoy it a lot and have made quite a few e-friends here, something I'm not real good at doing in the flesh.
Cool shot of this wasp in these bright flowers, ceratinly a nie collection of colours.
Cheers
Chris

Hi Bob,
What a breathtaking view of spring here.the pink is so moving and cheerful !...but the notes also warn one of the scare that is frolicking here enjoying the beuaty and the joy of the flower just as we are all watching and enjoying.

I had absolutely no idea wasps gave such poisonous stings, thouigh i remmber being stung by one as a little child. They had a hive inside the big well in my mum's house. In summer when the well went dry and people were called into clean it, i was standing right by the side of the well and was suddenly pierced by a shooting pain at the back of my arm.The sting gave me enough cramps to last a week and a whole week when my gran passed with applying hot turmeric pouches and medicines!

Despite the dangerous charecter the wasp tend to exhibit and about which i have now read in your notes, i cannot but abstain myself from appreciating the beauty of it sitting on the rich pink blossoms you have here. The details on the wasp are fine though i would have liked a little more closer shot for a macro. Yet the little one is sharp enough for a good view. The blossoms looks marvellous and spreading a very cheery mood to the whole composition. I espcially like the OOF flower in the BG and its peculiar look. The BG of fine muted Green with a tinge of red at the corners add to the beauty of the presentation.

Thank you for the superb cpature and very well written informative notes.
Cheers

Hi Bob,

A nice clodse-up image of the wasp on the flower. The details and colors of the insect and of the flower are clear and sharp. The subject is well frame. The colors are enhanced by the good l;ight. have a nice day.
