[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For most of the year there isn't a cloud in the sky in Tucson, AZ. But in monsoon season the changing sky is a joy to behold. The sights range from the beautiful to the threatening. On this particular day there was a lovely scene looking in each and every direction.

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way. Joni Mitchell - "Both Sides Now"

Clouds are visible accumulations of water droplets or solid ice crystals that float in the Earth's troposphere (the lowest part of the Earth's atmosphere), moving with the wind. From space, clouds are visible as a white veil surrounding the planet.
Clouds form when water vapor (water that has evaporated from the surface of the Earth) condenses (turns into liquid water or solid ice) onto microscopic dust particles (or other tiny particles) floating in the air. This condensation (cloud formation) happens when warm and cold air meet, when warm air rises up the side of a mountain and cools as it rises, and when warm air flows over a colder area, like a cool body of water. This occurs because cool air can hold less water vapor than warm air, and excess water condenses into either liquid or ice.

Thanks for posting.

Hello Jane
I like a good cloud...Just to watch it change its shapes and forms as it grows or declines...This is a stunning formation and captured superbly..The peaks of the hills really give a sense of perspective..(If James sees this I am sure he would be able to tell you the different types of cloud)
All the Best
Paul

Hello Jane,
It must be really nice to see clouds when they're as rare as they seem to be in Tucson.
This is a very beautiful capture of these fluffy clouds although I expect they're building up for a storm. Great DOF, lovely colours and very well composed!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hi Jane

Yhere is a massive amount of air movement here - in the upper and lower atmosphere - there are both cirrus, alto and strato clouds here - and yet this is not a 'hammerhead' - it looks as if there was massive air instability. Just how hot had it been? Was there a dramatic change in temperature? A strong wind?

Anyway - beautifully caught and exposued.

James

Hallo Jane
What a sensational view of these billowing clouds. A photographic moment seen and the opportunity well taken. A well exposed cloud formation. Seeing them develop is fascinating scenery, wondering what will come out in the end, rain thunder or shine. A cloud formation well focused, composed and presented. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy your day.

Hi Jane,
what awesome fluffy clouds!
These kind of shots are always hard to expose yet you've done it very well.
Great composition.
Superb DOF too.

Great work!

Joe

Yesterday evening, I casually strolled on to the terrace of my house and was delighted to see a thick bank of monsoon clouds obliterating the sun and creating a marvellous effect, Jane. I quickly grabbed my camera and took a few shots.
Unfortunately, the urban horizon, especially in our country with those mazes of wires and cables, makes an unappetizing scene. I tried to avoid them, but it did not work. Let me edit the raw files and see if I made any sense.

In your picture, the horizon of a dark hill looks pristine and the interesting monsoon cloud shapes hovering over it look beautiful. The dark hill also contrasts well with white and gray clouds.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful image and best regards.
Ram

Beautiful cloud formations captured Jane,
The image imparts a wonderful 3D sense of depth in that glorious sky..Very well contrasted "ice cream castles" :)

Jane, this is a fantastic sight, I am breathless! Beautiful and you mention my favorite singer too! Your picture of these clouds is a regal, with beautiful colours and deepness to reach out to the sky. I mean, we seem to be small insects compared to one of this fluffly beauty. Thank you!

Francine

Hello Jane

I looked and looked and saw no birds, but then I remembered that birds fly in the sky,so this is a bird shot, just of their domain.
Excellent contrast between the blue and white.
The colours are rich.
