What can I say? It is a grasshopper:-) They normally elude me quickly but this one seemed to let me close in to about 2 feet before it took off and even then it didn't fly too far and on it went for a bit. then he finally flew of to the hinterlands.

Unusually enough I was walking on this rare occasion with my youngest son who is 6' 10" tall and weighs only 168...tall and lanky he has a giant stride so it was hard for me to keep up with him. so when this grasshopper appeared it gave me time to take a break and stop breathing so hard....whew....and then there was some bending involved in the shoot, but I survived it all and chalked it up to a good days physical therapy and nature appreciation.

Haha, Bob, very good title :-) I like Dennis Hopper, especially in Blue Velvet movie. Good macro of this polite model. Nice colour, maybe not very usefull as camouflage, but nice :-)

Hello Bob,
Looks quite interesting & muscular. Apparently has a color which blends well with the dry earth or the rocks it prefers to live in. Good to know about the physique of your youngest son.:-)

Hello Bob,
You got a rest on your walk, some exercise and a very fine capture of a beautiful and bright grasshopper!! Not bad going! This is a very fine specimen shown sharply against the gravel. Amazing colour - I suppose it looks poisonous to a predator. A fine composition and well done!!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

I haven't seen many Dennis Hopper films but this grasshopper must have made you think of him.
It is by any standards a fine macro, Bob, but other than Dennis I can't put a name to him.
looks good against the gravel BG, his rusty brown colour providing camouflage against such a BG.
TFS,
Ivan

Great macro shot Bob,
Very sharp and detailed with a very unusual color.
The ones around here are more of a tan color. This one reminds me of a copper penny.
I took my grandson for a walk the other day out behind the house, and he kept trying to catch one of these guys. They would let him only get so close before they took off and flew about ten yards in front of us. We still had fun trying to sneak up on them though.

Hi Bob,

The close-up of the grasshopper is giving the impression to be a giant insect. The details and colors of the insect are clear and sharp. The subject is well frame. The good luminosity brings out the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Bob,

I've never seen a grasshopper this color. Great close-up with good details of the entire insect. I love the eye! I'm still trying to figure out why we have no grasshoppers here this year.
