I took a short drive by myself yesterday, a rarity without Jane but I had my two-way communications transceivers on. This trip took me to a place I have not been before. It is a small tract of land which belongs partly to the scablands of the western plains and partly to Turnbull Nation Wildlife Refuge. This is one area that is not fence..and it is strewn all about with volcanic rocks of all sizes. The one pictured is four (4) feet tall standing on its edge almost as a monolith. It is also FULL of lichen.

Around the area are hot dried rounds with a few wildflowers and many dried weeds and herbs...I had the Leica at ground level looking slightly upwards in the 16:9 mode which i have cropped for TN.

I feel as though I am an important part to the geology of this 15 million year old rocklands...which in my humble opinion are not very well known and perhaps studied but there are so many square miles it would take a whole university team many years to document.

Hi Bob. A unusual sight to see this old rock. You say its covered with lichen this is surposed to mean clean air i am told. You have done well in the bright light. good detail in the dried up plants. with natural colours. well done TFS.
Nick..

This is interesting Bob.
Interesting in several ways: you take an interesting ground-level POV that gives the dried ground vegetation a prominent role in this composition that is still very much dominated by the boulder that I find fascinating. Firstly the lichens in the shaded area are quite different to those exposed to the sun, being flat and patch-like, whereas those in the sun appear to be round, a bit like moss, but it may also be the structure of the volcanic rock as seen from the side.
I am still intrigued!
Ivan

You are discovering new things - the volcanic rock has worn well for all those years. Imagine the heat and strength that hurled it out of the ground to land there. Quite amazing
Thank you
Janice

Namastay Bob,
A nice capture of this Volcanic rock. A very good low level horizontal POV. Superb composition with plants in the foreground. Nicely captured. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
HP

hello Bob,
You have a strong link to all which is mineral! I understand it well looking at this interesting and archaic landscape. Beautiful lichens on the volcanic rock . I also like the light on the plants in the front of the picture.
Un grand merci
Anne

Hello Bob. Excellent avatar in the intro page :-)
Nice shot at this perspective with the rock in fine clarity and details. The weeds and the light is just brilliant against the spotless blue sky. Well done. Jusni

Hello Bob,
This is a very attractive capture of this volcanic rock from a nice low POV. I like the lichencovered surface where the lichens in the shade match the colour of the dry grass. A fine composition too.
TFS and regards, Ulla

GREAT LAST PARAGHAPH in your notes. Very true.
Bob,
Your are right!!!
These scientists only want to pollute our home, Mother Earth, the ONLY HOME WE HAVE.
I've studied this image with joy.
What's the "GREEN" spot right in the center???
